In Lemvig Municipality, experiences range from hiking trails and wildlife watching to a lighthouse, museums and ice art. You can therefore choose different priorities when planning your trip: a walk, a longer bike ride, or time to explore local history and culture.

Getting around on foot and by bike

Lemvig Municipality has published a brochure with ten walking and hiking routes in the town of Lemvig. Detailed maps and overview maps of all the town’s public paths help you find your way. The Planetstien offers another way to combine a route with a theme: this marked walking trail is twelve kilometres long, with shorter options leading to Saturn and Neptune. Along the route, the solar system is shown to a scale of one to a billion.

The Sundhedssporet is 1,350 metres long and mostly flat. It takes about 15 minutes to walk this route or, depending on fitness, approximately seven to ten minutes to run it. At Naturrum Thyborøn, there are two hiking trails, four and eleven kilometres long. Information boards along the way share facts about nature and culture. The eleven-kilometre trail passes a bird-watching hide, where swimming birds, waders and birds of prey can be observed.

Nature and exercise in Klosterheden Plantation

Klosterheden Plantation is a destination for nature experiences and cycling. It is home to Denmark’s largest beaver population, with nearly 200 animals; 18 were released here in 1999. Red deer are another special feature: the plantation is home to one of Denmark’s largest red deer populations. Wildlife populations and sightings can vary according to the season.

A 50-kilometre mountain bike route runs through the plantation, half of which consists of singletrack. It can be split into shorter sections: the western part is 34 kilometres long, while the eastern part is about 28 kilometres. These different distances offer practical guidance for planning a ride without committing to the entire route. Another destination in the plantation is the historic watermill Kjærgaard Mølle, by Bredkær Bæk.

Lighthouse, mills and museum

Bovbjerg Fyr first began operating as a lighthouse in 1877. It stands close to the edge of the 41-metre-high Bovbjerg Klint and offers views across the North Sea. The lighthouse hosts art exhibitions, talks, communal meals and walks; specific events may vary. Among the mills, the approximately 500-year-old, listed Aa-Mølle offers a different historical perspective. It is located near Nissum Bredning, in a moraine ridge area on elevated seabed from the Ice Age.

At Lemvig Museum, the exhibition on the history of the trading town traces Lemvig’s development from the Middle Ages to the present day. The exhibition “Vestjylland og verden” adds a broader perspective: using objects, it shows the connections between the Lemvig region and the rest of the world in the 18th and 19th centuries. Henning Gantriis’ comic series “Livets gang i Lidenlund” is also connected to the town; at the museum, you can explore its world.

Iskunsten is a permanent exhibition venue for ice sculptures and ice art. The exhibition themes, and therefore the sculptures, change several times a year. This makes a visit a different kind of cultural experience from the historical exhibitions at Lemvig Museum.

Experiences on the water and local information

At JyllandsAkvariet, visitors can touch sharks in touch pools, stroke rays along their backs and hold crabs. The aquarium also offers boat safaris to watch seals and dolphins. The dolphin safari goes to Thyborøn Channel, where the North Sea and Limfjord meet; wildlife sightings naturally vary. Boat safaris are seasonal and depend on the provider, so it is advisable to check dates in advance.

Nr. Nissum Håndbryg offers brewing courses with head brewer Jens Grøn, as well as beer tastings. If you would like to include this experience in your plans, check the dates and booking options before your trip. Staffed tourist information is available at Lemvig Library and at Iskunsten in Thyborøn, where brochures are available. Staffing may vary by season. Midtjyske Jernbaner operates the 57-kilometre Vemb–Lemvig–Thyborøn railway line. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable.
