Lemvig combines city history with art, interactive exhibitions and walking routes of varying lengths. You can explore the development of the market town, discover historic urban settings or follow routes through the valley and surrounding landscape.

City History, Architecture and Art

At Lemvig Museum, the exhibition “Lemvig Købstads historie” explores the history of the town from the Middle Ages to the present day. This also includes the relationship between the market town and its surrounding area. Other exhibitions focus on shipwrecks and rescue services, the rugged natural environment, and people who have lived in the Lemvig region for generations.

The children’s exhibition “Lidenlund i børnehøjde” explores life in a small Danish town in the 1950s: children can play, dress up and try out the daily routines of the people who lived there at the time. At the Museum of Religious Art, changing special exhibitions bring contemporary and older art from Denmark and abroad together. Topics include religion, mythology, fundamental questions of life, and art from and about Greenland.

Lemvig Church stands in the middle of the market square and has been a centre of community life since the 12th century. During an extensive renovation and expansion from 1933 to 1935, it acquired its current appearance, including its distinctive onion-shaped spire. Here, you can see the church’s long history and a much more recent change to its architecture in the same place.

Town Walks and Landscape Routes

The municipal walking guide describes ten walks in Lemvig By, combining routes through the town with stories from the past and present. Detailed maps and overview maps of public paths help you find your way. One route with a particular focus on local history is “I Gantriis' Fodspor”: the 2.7-kilometre walk takes you to 17 marked stops. These include old buildings, narrow lanes with inns, the church square, shopping streets, Kærlighedssti, densely built-up lanes and the harbour.

The Planetstien also has a clear theme: it runs from the centre of Lemvig to Gjellerodde and represents the solar system at a scale of 1:1 billion. The model spans from the Sun to Pluto. At Skulpturstien, the sculpture collection includes 54 works by sculptor Torvald Westergaard (1901–1988). The route also leads to a staircase with 177 steps and views over the town and harbour.

The stated distances provide a practical basis for comparing walks, without indicating walking time or difficulty. “I Gantriis' Fodspor” is 2.7 kilometres long; around Lemvig Sødal, there are marked routes of 4.5 or 6 kilometres. The 6.1-kilometre Hjertestien passes through forests and open meadows to the Limfjord, starting and ending at Lemvig Sø.

Lemvig Sødal is a tunnel valley formed by meltwater during the last Ice Age, around 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. It stretches from the town to the flat heathland to the south. The paths around the valley therefore offer a different landscape setting from Hjertestien, which leads to the Limfjord. The 18-hole course at Lemvig Golf Club offers views of Horn Sø, the Limfjord and the town of Lemvig.

Exhibitions and Activities

At Klimatorium, the interactive exhibition “Klima uden grænser” explores climate challenges and solutions. Children and adults explore the topics through games, technology and activities. You can visit without a guided tour or booking in advance; visiting arrangements are subject to the venue’s seasonal rules.

Films are shown daily at Biohuset Lemvig, usually at 17:30 and 20:00. It is a good idea to check the current programme before your visit. Concerts, talks and other cultural events are also held there regularly. The BjergBanen train runs along the old harbour railway between Lemvig station and the harbour; the journey takes about 15 minutes. Services are seasonal, so it is a good idea to check the operating days before planning your trip.
