Coastal scenery, art and history come together in Ferring. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Ferring, these different themes can help guide your plans: views of the west coast, paths by the lake and along the sea, as well as museums and historic sites.

Coastal Cliff and Ice Age Landscape

Bovbjerg Profilet is a coastal cliff on the west coast of Jutland. It stretches for 6 kilometres from Ferring in the north to Fjaltring in the south. The main section is considered to be the just over 3-kilometre stretch from Ferring to Trans Kirke. This distinction helps differentiate the full extent of the cliff from the central part of the geopark.

The geological history is also part of the story of Bovbjerg Profilet: layers from the Elster, Saale and Weichsel glaciations have been found there. The landscape can therefore be viewed both as a coastal landform and in the context of different ice ages. At Bovbjerg Fyr, this connection with nature is explored through group tours and talks. They cover nature shaped by the Ice Age and the history of the lighthouse; tours and talks for groups are available on request.

Art and Coastal History

The Jens Søndergaard Museum is located at the far edge of the cliff near Ferring. It houses some of the artist’s major works as well as lesser-known paintings and drawings. Drawing materials are available among the artworks for visitors to create their own pieces. The museum thus focuses both on Søndergaard’s paintings and on visitors’ own creative experimentation.

Another way to explore the coast’s history is to visit Bovbjerg Fyr. The lighthouse was built in 1877 and was one of the first on Denmark’s west coast. An exhibition is dedicated to former lighthouse keepers, life in the lighthouse and the many shipwrecks along the coast. A new art exhibition is also on display there every two months. Art in the museum and at the lighthouse is therefore part of two different visitor experiences: the focus here is on Søndergaard’s works and drawing materials, while the exhibitions there change regularly.

Paths Around Ferring Sø

The walking trail around Ferring Sø passes through a variety of landscape and nature types. A cycle path also runs between the lake and the North Sea along a route that was once a railway line for small material wagons. For your planning, these are two distinct points of interest: the circular trail, with its changing landscapes and natural environments around the lake, and the cycle path between the lake and the sea. The former Tipvogn route from Ferring to Bovbjerg Fyr is paved and continues along the coast to Trans Kirke.

Fishing at Ferring Sø is another option: you can fish with a rod from the municipal shoreline or from the floating jetty in front of it. Local fishing regulations may change, so check the rules in force before fishing.

Church and Swimming Season

In Ferring Kirke, remnants of a large lime painting dating from around 1200 can be seen on the north wall of the nave. It depicts scenes from the childhood and life of Jesus. The mural connects the site with a long church history and adds an older historical record to the art and lighthouse themes.

For the 2026 bathing season, from 1 June to 31 August, Ferring was among the beaches in Lemvig Municipality awarded the Blue Flag. This designation applies to the season and may change from one bathing season to the next.
