Thyborøn between the North Sea and the Limfjord
Accommodation in Thyborøn
Thyborøn lies where the North Sea meets the Limfjord. When planning a hotel stay, you can first decide what interests you most: the coastal landscape, guided experiences on the water, or the history of the First World War in the North Sea.
Coast, dunes and views
In Thyborøn, you can relax on wide sandy beaches and explore the dunes. Høfde 59 offers a view of the sea and the Thyborøn Channel. This gives you two different coastal perspectives to choose from: spending time on the beach and in the dunes, or taking in the sea and channel from this named location.
Naturrum Thyborøn has walking trails of various lengths through scenic natural surroundings. The different trail lengths can help you decide whether to plan a shorter walk or a longer hike. The Naturrum also includes a nature playground near the coast and a viewing platform. From the platform, you can see the town, the lagoon lakes and the wind turbines. You can therefore choose between trails, the playground and the views as different ways to experience this natural area.
Guided experiences on the water
A boat trip for a seal safari departs from Havnegade 5C in Thyborøn and approaches the seals near the mouth of the Limfjord. Another way to explore the coast is Ravsafari – Thyborøn: this guided beach experience, offered year-round, explains where, how and when visitors can find amber. The difference is clear: the boat trip focuses on getting close to the seals, while the amber tour teaches you about searching for amber on the beach. If you plan to take part in either experience, check the relevant dates and availability in advance.
Another guided tour goes around the harbour and through Thyborøn aboard the iconic tractor bus Spætten. Surfcentret in Thyborøn offers lessons in surfing, stand-up paddleboarding and sea kayaking. This lets you choose between a guided tour of the area and lessons in a specific water sport. For these activities, too, it is advisable to check dates and availability before making plans.
Museums and places of remembrance
Iskunsten is Europe's only year-round exhibition of ice sculptures. The exhibition content may change. The Sea War Museum Jutland in Thyborøn focuses on the history of the First World War in the North Sea, particularly the Battle of Jutland.
The Mindepark for Jyllandsslaget features 26 large granite stones, each symbolising a sunken warship. It also has 400 human figures symbolising the sailors who fell. This historic visitor site lies in the dunes near Thyborøn and offers a view of the North Sea. The museum and the memorial park therefore have different emphases: the museum explores the events of the war in the North Sea, while the stones and figures in the park symbolise ships and fallen sailors.
The Sneglehuset is covered inside and out with thousands of snail shells and large seashells. Today, it is a small museum with an ice cream café, exhibitions and a shop. If you plan to visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
Fiskedag and travel planning
Fiskedag takes place every year on the first Saturday in August in Thyborøn. Visitors can sample fresh fish and listen to music. Check the event date and programme when planning your specific trip.
The Lemvigbanen is also worth considering when planning your trip: its route runs from Vemb via Lemvig to Thyborøn. If you plan to use the Lemvigbanen, check the timetable in advance.
