Albertslund: Nature, the Viking Age and Culture
Accommodation in Albertslund
More than 60 percent of Albertslund’s area is covered by forests and green spaces. This gives the destination a green character, with cycling routes, nature activities and historic sites. The cycling routes connect residential areas, villages and green parks—offering a route of their own for anyone who wants to explore Albertslund by bike.
Nature and cycling in Albertslund
Hyldager Bakker in Kongsholmparken has a 1.2 km mountain biking course rated as intermediate. There is also a short skills trail at Hyldager Bakker for practising cornering and pump-track techniques. It is aimed at children and beginners. This means there is both specific information about length and difficulty and a facility for practising skills. Route details and conditions on site may change; check them before setting out.
Naturcenter Herstedhøje and the surrounding area are easily accessible for wheelchair users. If you rely on specific assistance, confirm the accessibility information before your trip. You can reach the nature centre by S-train to Albertslund Station, followed by a bus; check current connections before travelling.
A separate rule applies to driving up to the top of Herstedhøje: cars, buses and vehicles for people with disabilities may use the route on the first working day of each month from 9 am to 3 pm. If you plan to drive up, check the rules before your visit.
Experience the Viking Age
Vikingelandsbyen presents a reconstructed Viking Age setting. Visitors can try out what life was like at the time. The site can be visited on any day of the week and year. Outside teaching sessions, the houses are closed; the site remains open and is free for visitors to the forest. If you want to see inside individual houses, check the information about teaching sessions and special events.
Another tangible example of this reconstructed Viking setting is Haralds bro: the 700 m road and bridge route has also been reconstructed from the Viking Age. Vikingelandsbyen and this route offer different ways to engage with the period—one through a recreated setting, the other through a named road and bridge route.
Animals, horse riding and outdoor swimming
ToftegĂĄrden is open to visitors every day. There, you can see horses, sheep, chickens, rabbits and other animals up close. The animals kept there may change over time; admission conditions may also vary from day to day.
Albertslund Ridecenter offers a riding school and horse riding for people with disabilities. If you would like to take part, ask in advance about current participation options. The Friluftsbadet Badesøen outdoor swimming pool has a children’s pool, a swimming pool and pools with slides. The grounds also include volleyball courts, ball courts, a playground and a café area. Badesøen is open seasonally; check its current opening status before visiting.
Culture and architectural history
MusikTeatret Albertslund combines stage performances and cinema, offering music, theatre, comedy, shows and dance. The two cinema screens show current films every day of the week; the film programme changes regularly. Forbrændingen also presents concerts and events across a wide range of genres, including rock, jazz, pop, metal and hip-hop. The programme changes regularly, so it is worth checking current event dates when planning your visit.
At Herstedøster Church, two distinct construction phases can be seen. The 9 m-long Romanesque nave was built from split fieldstones in the 12th century; the Late Gothic tower dates from the 15th century. The time between the nave and the tower makes the different historical periods visible in the same building.
The sculpture “Thomas på Bjerget” stands on a hillside in Kongsholmparken. It is part of the artist Thomas Dambo’s “De seks glemte kæmper” project and is made from recycled wood. In the park, this artwork made from reused materials sits alongside the information about the mountain biking course at Hyldager Bakker, which is also located there.
