Muleby: Cycling, forest and industrial history
Accommodation in Muleby
When planning your trip to Muleby, it is helpful to distinguish between the town itself and nearby destinations. The Helligpeder cycling route passes through Muleby; forest paths, lakes, industrial history and fishing opportunities add to the attractions in the surrounding area.
Cycling and hiking
The Helligpeder cycling route passes through Muleby. Further along its regional route, it runs from Rønne through open woodland with forest lakes and hidden industrial relics, as well as through the small towns of Sorthat and Muleby. Another cycling route, a municipal path between Rønne and Hasle, passes through Blykobbe Plantage. This lets you distinguish between the Helligpeder route through the town and the connection between Rønne and Hasle through the plantation.
A yellow-marked hiking trail starts at Naturindgangen on Rosmannevej and leads through the quieter parts of Blykobbe Plantage. It passes Tillehøjene, Bavnehøj, Blykobbe Å, Prinsens Kilde and the earthworks in the coastal dunes. These stops give the hike a different focus from the two cycling routes: here, individual natural and cultural features along the trail take centre stage. Tables and benches are located in the plantation at busy spots and selected viewpoints. As trail conditions can change, check the current situation before setting out.
Forest and industrial history
In Kilen, nature-based recreation and industrial history go hand in hand. Kilen is a recreational forest close to town, used mainly as a local recreation area for Muleby. It is home to Klavsemølle-dæmningen, a road or transport embankment built and used to transport materials to and from the disused brickworks. The area is designated a national industrial heritage site.
Like the nearby lakes Smaragdsø and Rubinsø, Pyritsøen near Sorthat-Muleby was formed in former clay pits. The clay that was mined was used by Hasle Klinke- og Chamottestensfabrik to make clinker bricks and firebricks; clay extraction ended in the late 1980s. This reveals two distinct traces of industrial history: the embankment as a transport facility and the lakes as the result of former clay pits.
Fishing in the lake and on the coast
When choosing whether to focus on fishing, it is also worth distinguishing between the coast and the lake. The coast between Pyritsøen and Levka offers good fishing opportunities, including for sea trout; local conditions may vary. Pyritsøen is home to pike and perch. No fishing licence is required to fish in the lake itself. Check the applicable fishing regulations before your visit.
Another experience in the surrounding area
Near Sorthat-Muleby, the Natureventyr app experience features a dinosaur story and the mystery of the coal miners’ missing diamonds. Check in advance whether the app experience is currently available.
