History

Nylars Round Church served both religious and defensive purposes. Its upper levels were used to observe the surrounding area and served as a refuge during unrest. The church therefore represents a time when a religious building fulfilled religious functions while also being integrated into the protection of the local community.

A 37-hectare protected area was established around the church and east of Nylars in 1987. Its location connects the historic building with an explicitly protected landscape area. Nylars is also located on the road between Rønne and Aakirkeby. The former route of the Rønne–Nexø railway line is now used as a cycle path from Robbedale to east of Lobbæk. The former railway route has thus been preserved as a current route connection, while retaining its historical status.
