Karst landscapes, cycling and historical traces shape the themes of Veliki Bročanac. Pometeno Brdo and the area’s historical features are complemented by a road cycling route that passes through Veliki Bročanac.

Karst landscape at Pometeno Brdo

Pometeno Brdo in Veliki Bročanac is a limestone karst area with characteristic karst formations. It forms a relatively flat plateau at an elevation of 450 to 520 metres. Stony pasture vegetation has been preserved in parts of the area. The karst, the plateau’s shape and the preserved vegetation each add their own character to the landscape.

Historical traces

The local heritage includes the churches of St Peter and St Francis, Sv. Frane, Orošnjakove staje, the Lokvica well, a medieval settlement, the Ucin well, the prehistoric Ucin hill, the stone hill of Brdo Uca and the prehistoric hills of Prosine. The historical features thus range from churches and wells to prehistoric landforms and a medieval settlement.

In Općina Klis, the Church of St John is first mentioned in the mid-14th century. Its construction is associated with the period when the noble Šubić family ruled Klis in the 13th and 14th centuries. The parish church in Klis was built in the Varoš district below the fortress. From 1900 to 1902, the new single-nave church was expanded into a three-nave building, based on a design by architect Ćiril Metod Iveković. Inside the parish church is a cycle of wall paintings by Vjekoslav Parać, dating from 1939. It depicts scenes from the medieval history of Klis and is considered one of the most significant works of monumental figurative wall painting in Croatia from the first half of the 20th century.

Another historical perspective is offered by the Crkvine archaeological site in Klapavice, within the wider destination of Općina Klis: it illustrates life in the Dalmatian hinterland from late antiquity to the late Middle Ages.

The Debelo Brdo hiking trail is also part of the wider destination of Općina Klis. It is 4,500 metres long, very difficult and challenging, and runs through steep, rocky terrain covered in maquis. This makes for an explicitly demanding hike, in contrast to road cycling on the All-seasons-trail route through Veliki Bročanac: the activities have different profiles.
