Prugovo: Church, History and Hotels

Prugovo’s history and the former Church of St. Anthony
Prugovo was first recorded in 1397 in a list of villages in the Klis District. A specific way to explore the village’s history is through the former parish Church of St. Anthony: it stood at the site of today’s cemetery and had been built before 1704. A visitation in 1709 described it as a newly built church with a tiled roof. The old church was demolished in 1881 after the new church had been built. The remaining chapel became the cemetery chapel.
The current church is a stone building with Neo-Romanesque elements and a Latin cross floor plan. Its exterior also features several distinct architectural details, including hanging arcades, a tympanum, three arched windows, a façade clock, a pentagonal apse and a stone bell tower. The Latin cross floor plan describes the shape of the building; the individual façade elements, by contrast, draw attention to the design of the exterior walls and tower.
The church’s more recent artistic history includes its decoration in 1994 by local artists Petar, Vlado and Andrija Jakelić. One of the paintings depicts the Mother of God above a panorama of Prugovo, together with a Croatian soldier. The image combines a religious depiction with a local motif. Visitors interested in church art will find here, alongside the building itself, a specific connection to Prugovo in the panorama depicted.
