Brštanovo lies on the southern slopes of Moseć. Two main features define the village: the Rajčica wells in the Karst landscape and the history of the parish. Brštanovo can thus be discovered through its landscape and cultural heritage, without conflating these distinct themes.

Karst landscape and the Rajčica wells

The Rajčica wells are a natural attraction in the landscape around Brštanovo. Rajčica consists of ten old wells built as circular dry-stone structures. In the Karst landscape, they have significant environmental value and form a green spatial landmark. As an exceptional hydrological phenomenon, they add a distinctive feature to the landscape. For travellers particularly interested in nature and the characteristic formations of the Karst, the wells are an important point of interest.

A road between Brštanovo, Nisko and Matas, reconstructed in 2019, improved public access to the Rajčica wells at the time. If you are planning a visit, check current road conditions before setting out.

Parish history and church tradition

The parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is at the heart of the local church history. The parish of Brštanovo was founded around 1720 by Franciscan friars from Rama, who brought new inhabitants to the area. A bell tower was added to the west façade of the church in 1959. A municipal planning document from 2020 lists the parish church as a preventive-protection cultural property under designation P-6084. The founding of the parish and the later addition to the church building thus mark two distinct moments in the village’s history.

The parish feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary also offers a historical insight into religious tradition. A description from 2009 recounts a village procession, two Masses and an evening blessing. These details describe the feast as it was held at the time, not a current event date. Culture in the wider destination of Općina Klis

In the wider destination of Općina Klis, Klis Fortress is a cultural and historical attraction in its own right. It is one of the best-preserved late medieval and Baroque fortifications and stands on a steep rocky outcrop between the Kozjak and Mosor mountains. The complex consists of three enclosed sections, each with its own entrance. This layout represents a different architectural focus from the wells and parish history that define Brštanovo.

Also in the wider destination of Općina Klis, below Klis in the southeastern part of the Kliško polje, are the Church of St. John and the Crkvine archaeological site in Klapavice. The church is first mentioned in the mid-14th century; its construction is associated with the period when the nobles of the Šubić family ruled over Klis in the 13th and 14th centuries. Crkvine illustrates life in the Dalmatian hinterland from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages. Općina Klis thus offers other cultural themes spanning a much broader period alongside the local history of Brštanovo.

When choosing your destination, you can clearly distinguish between the main attractions: Brštanovo brings together a Karst landscape and parish history; Klis Fortress, the Church of St. John and Crkvine belong to the wider destination of Općina Klis.
