Klis is situated in an elevated, rocky location, with views stretching towards Split and the coast. The fortress overlooks the sea on one side and the Dalmatian hinterland on the other. The coastal views and the hinterland thus offer two different perspectives on the landscape around the town. If you choose Klis as your destination, these contrasts provide a first impression of its character.

Fortress and Culture in Općina Klis

In the wider destination of Općina Klis, Klis Fortress is one of the best-preserved late medieval and Baroque fortifications. It consists of three separate sections, each with its own entrance. The fortress also houses the Ethno Museum Uskok Armoury. It displays replicas of Klis Uskok uniforms, equipment, trophy weapons and cannonballs. The exhibits may change over time. The fortress is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; check the hours before your visit.

Churches and Historical Traces

The parish church in Klis stands in the Varoš neighbourhood below the fortress. The new single-nave church was expanded into a three-nave building from 1900 to 1902, based on a design by architect Ćiril Metod Iveković. Inside is a mural cycle by Vjekoslav Parać, dating from 1939. The scenes draw on the medieval history of Klis; the cycle is considered one of the most significant works of monumental figurative mural painting in Croatia from the first half of the 20th century.

Another trace of the region’s ecclesiastical history in the destination of Općina Klis is the Church of St John. It is first mentioned in the mid-14th century. Its construction is associated with the period when nobles of the Šubić family ruled Klis in the 13th and 14th centuries. The Crkvine archaeological site in Klapavice, in turn, illustrates life in the Dalmatian hinterland from Late Antiquity to the late Middle Ages.

The Roman road also brings the region’s long history to life: its archaeological section in the Klapavice–Kurtovići area of Klis and Dugopolje is two kilometres long. The road led from Salona through Klis and the Dugopolje plateau into the Dalmatian hinterland. West of Klis Fortress is Česma, a mihrab fountain with niches and the only surviving monument of its kind in Croatia.

Hiking, Local Cuisine and RajÄŤica

The Debelo brdo hiking trail is 4,500 metres long and is considered very difficult and demanding. It passes through steep, rocky terrain covered in maquis. When planning, take into account both the trail’s length and its challenging nature, and check the local conditions before setting out.

Klis is associated with traditional dishes prepared ispod peke, under a covered baking bell. Spit-roasted lamb is also part of the culinary profile of the wider destination of Općina Klis. These are regional specialities, not recommendations for a particular restaurant.

The Rajčica site is located in nearby Brštanovo near Klis. It comprises ten old wells built as circular dry-stone structures. In the past, local residents used them for their water supply. Alongside its fortress and archaeological traces, the area around Klis also bears witness to everyday life in the past.
