Dugobabe combines sacred history with nature-related themes and traditions from everyday life. Several perspectives may be worth considering when planning your trip: the church and its religious traditions, the nature trail at the Pometeno Brdo solar energy site, and traces of wells, the village pond and historic dishes. This can help you decide whether church and festival history, environmental knowledge or the rural past best suits your interests.

Church and Religious Traditions

The Church of Blessed Ivan of Trogir was consecrated in 1912 and restored in 1960, 1976–77 and 2000. Its main altar was created by Ante Frank in 1959. The church is under preventive protection; its register code is P-1879. It belongs to the parish of Brštanovo, and there is also a cemetery in Dugobabe.

St Ivan Trogirski is the patron saint of Dugobabe; the veneration dates back to the time of the Diocese of Trogir. At a historic patron saint’s day celebration, a procession carrying the saint’s statue went around the church. The church restorations, the altar and the procession offer different perspectives, providing insight into the building’s history, its design and religious tradition.

Festival Day and Traditional Foods

The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated annually on a Sunday rather than a Friday. It includes a special Mass and a procession. Guests and relatives gather for lamb and other festive dishes. The Sunday date sets this local celebration apart from Friday observances; both the Mass and the procession are part of the occasion.

There are also traditions relating to earlier eating habits. The historic diet in Dugobabe was based on bread made from barley, millet and krupnik, as well as polenta, potatoes, cheese and milk. Together with the festive dishes, these foods offer insight into different aspects of local food culture: the special gathering for the festival and the traditional staple foods.

Nature Trail and Landscape

The nature trail at the Pometeno Brdo solar energy site in Dugobabe has ten information panels about environmental protection and local flora and fauna. Solar panels form the basis of the educational content. In this way, the trail brings together the themes of solar energy, nature conservation and local plant and animal life. The information panels and the specific number of thematic stops make the trail a clearly defined nature and environmental feature of the destination.

Dugobabe has no running watercourses, but it does have numerous wells. A large village pond is mentioned as early as the 16th century. The absence of running watercourses, together with the wells and pond, presents a different picture of the local landscape from the trail and its nature themes: the focus here is on historic landscape features. The village pond and wells thus complement the sacred and culinary traditions with a glimpse of the cultural landscape shaped over time.

Other Historical Highlights in the Wider Destination of Općina Klis

In the wider destination of Općina Klis, Klis Fortress offers a distinct focus on military architecture. It is one of the best-preserved late medieval and Baroque fortifications. The complex consists of three enclosed sections, each with its own entrance. This is a different historical focus from the church and festival traditions in Dugobabe.

The parish church in Klis also offers a concrete glimpse into the architectural history of the wider destination of Općina Klis. It was built in the Varoš district below the fortress. The new single-nave building was expanded into a three-nave church between 1900 and 1902, based on a design by architect Ćiril Metod Iveković. Inside, a cycle of murals by Vjekoslav Parać, dating from 1939, depicts scenes from the medieval history of Klis. It is considered one of the most significant works of monumental figurative mural painting in Croatia from the first half of the 20th century.

Another distinct feature of the wider destination of Općina Klis is the Debelo Brdo hiking trail. It is 4,500 metres long and passes through steep, rocky terrain covered in maquis; the route is considered very difficult and demanding. Its length, terrain and difficulty rating help identify it as a challenging hiking option and distinguish it from the historical themes in Dugobabe.
