Discover Kvarner Bay through its cultural sites, natural areas, and distinctive landscapes. In Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the themes range from Frankopan castles and religious sites to forests, cave landscapes, and cycling routes. When planning your stay, you can first consider whether cultural history, nature interpretation, or active exploration should be your priority.

Cultural Sites and Nature Interpretation

The Putovima Frankopana cultural-tourism route includes a total of 17 Frankopan castles and three religious sites in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. This brings together two distinct forms of cultural heritage. If you are interested in Frankopan history, the route provides a broad cultural framework for planning your trip; you can focus your interests on either the castles or the religious sites.

Zrinski Castle in Brod na Kupi houses a permanent exhibition and an interpretation center about the nature of Gorski Kotar and the relationship of the Frankopan and Zrinski families with nature. Its thematic focus connects nature and cultural history without being limited to a single perspective. As opening arrangements may change, check the current visiting conditions before your visit.

Natural Areas, Forest, and Cave

The Natura 2000 network includes 111 sites in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It covers nearly 75 percent of the land area and 16 percent of the sea area. The figures explicitly distinguish between land and sea, showing the extent of the network in both. This offers a different way to get your bearings in the region than focusing on individual natural attractions: here, the emphasis is on a network of sites and the share of area it covers.

In Golubinjak Forest Park, forests and rock formations are the main natural features. At Zeleni Vir, an emerald-green lake with crystal-clear, still water lies inside a cave; the spring is at the bottom of the cave. The two descriptions draw attention to different landscape features: forest and rock in the forest park, and cave, lake, and spring at Zeleni Vir.

Munjara, considered the first hydroelectric power plant in this area, is located in the protected landscape area of Vražji Prolaz and Zeleni Vir. This technical heritage adds the history of hydropower to the nature-related themes. The “Velike zvijeri” visitor center in Stara Sušica also has its own focus: it is dedicated to the three large predators—the bear, wolf, and lynx—and contributes to the development of tourism and interpretation of Gorski Kotar’s natural environment. You can therefore learn about nature both through landscapes and through interpretation.

Canyon Section and Cycling Routes

The section of Kamačnik Canyon open to visitors begins at the confluence and is about one kilometer long. Its approximate length gives you a specific sense of the distance involved in this particular section. As local access conditions may change, check for current information before your visit.

A 2021 park description lists cycling routes ranging from 4.2 to 40 kilometers on a map of Risnjak National Park. Check the current map and route availability before setting out. Kamačnik describes the length of an accessible canyon section, while the national park map lists cycling-route distances. When planning your outings, you can first decide whether you would rather focus on a canyon section or a cycling trip.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

The cultural and landscape themes offer different ways to shape a stay in Kvarner Bay. The Putovima Frankopana route and Zrinski Castle highlight different aspects of history and the relationship with nature. Golubinjak, Zeleni Vir, and the protected landscape area with Munjara represent forest, rock, cave, and technical heritage; the “Velike zvijeri” visitor center interprets the nature of Gorski Kotar through the bear, wolf, and lynx. When planning your hotel stay, these themes can be a useful starting point for deciding which places and activities you would like to explore further.
