Vražji prolaz is a narrow canyon at the end of which lies the Muževa hišica cave. Together with the Zeleni vir spring, it gives the natural attractions of the Municipality of Skrad a distinctive character. Hiking trails, viewpoints, churches and the Munjara hydroelectric power plant complete the picture.

Protected landscape between canyon and spring

Vražji prolaz and Zeleni vir form a protected landscape that was designated in 1962 and covers 252 hectares. Vražji prolaz is a canyon about 800 metres long, and in some places only about two metres wide. A hiking trail runs along the canyon: in some places, it is cut into the rocks above the stream; elsewhere, it is built with bridges and steps.

Muževa hišica is a cave about 200 metres long at the end of Vražji prolaz. There is a lake in its chamber. Zeleni vir is a powerful spring at the bottom of a shallow cave below a rock face about 70 metres high. Within the protected landscape, the canyon, cave and spring thus stand alongside one another as distinct natural features.

The area's wildlife is also part of the picture: fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) and grass snakes (Natrix natrix) are among the species found in and around the waters of Vražji prolaz. The Zeleni vir protected area also has an ornithological observation station.

Hiking trails, peaks and viewpoints

A marked hiking trail leads to Skradski vrh. At the summit are a chapel and benches where you can rest; from there, you can enjoy wide views across southern Gorski kotar and the Kupa Valley. The “Rudetova bajta” mountain lodge is also located on Skradski vrh.

The circular trail with three viewpoints starts at Skrad railway station. Kavranova stijena is the first viewpoint and Perić the second. This circular trail also forms part of the Goranska planinarska transverzala. Check the current condition of the trail before setting out.

Hiking, along with the maintenance of mountain trails and walking paths, is among the main activities of the “Skradski vrh” mountaineering association in the municipality. The Hrvatska planinarska obilaznica and the Goranski planinarski put pass through the area in which it operates. The trails and viewpoints mentioned offer different starting points for planning a trip, without needing to be combined into a single route.

Churches and technical heritage

The church dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua in Skrad was built in 1694. It is the oldest church in the municipality and is located above the centre of Skrad. The Church of Saint Isidore in Divjake was built in 1754. The independent parish of Saint Isidore in Divjake was established in 1807 and at the time included all the settlements in the area that now belongs to the Municipality of Skrad.

The “Munjara” hydroelectric power plant is another testament to local history. It is considered a valuable monument of technical heritage and is still in operation. Together with the churches, it adds the history of technical and religious culture to the area's natural and hiking attractions.

A glimpse of the Raspberry Festival

The programme for the 17th Raspberry Festival, held on 28 June 2025 in Skradska draga, included a market for local produce. This included raspberries, chokeberries, juices, honey and jams. The programme also featured the presentation and distribution of a 50-metre-long raspberry strudel. A guided hike to Skradski vrh with licensed guides was also planned for the occasion.

Nature, marked trails, viewpoints and historic sites offer different perspectives on the Municipality of Skrad. As you plan, consider which of these you would like to shape your stay most, then choose the right hotel for your trip.
