Municipality of Mrkopalj: Nature, hiking trails and skiing history
Accommodation in Municipality of Mrkopalj
The Municipality of Mrkopalj combines protected landscapes with a defining winter sports history. The municipality is considered the cradle of Croatian skiing; Bijele stijene and Samarske stijene are also located within its area. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, nature, outdoor activities and local history can each be a focus of your trip.
Natural areas and finding your way on the trails
Bijele stijene and Samarske stijene were declared strict nature reserves in 1985. Anyone visiting these landscapes should check the applicable conservation rules beforehand. This keeps their protected status in mind when planning a trip, alongside the natural attractions themselves.
The Mrkopalj hiking trail has eight checkpoints. These include Vrh Samarskih stijena at 1,302 metres above sea level, Stepenica, Piramida and Veliki Kanjon, as well as Dvorac, JuĹľni vrh, Amfiteatar and Razbijeni vrh. These named stops provide a clear route; they do not specify a walking time or difficulty level.
Skiing between history and winter
The history of skiing is also reflected in a specific place: Croatia’s first ski jump was built in Mrkopalj in 1934. It was named “Pod Vrhin”. This gives the designation “cradle of Croatian skiing” a tangible historical connection.
Čelimbaša offers another option for winter activities. The Čelimbaša trail leads from Mrkopalj up Mount Čelimbaša to a viewpoint at the summit. In winter, Čelimbaša is used for skiing and sledding. The Croatian Biathlon Centre Zagmajna has 4.5 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails and a biathlon shooting range. The viewpoint, ski and sledding area, and cross-country skiing and biathlon facilities offer different options to consider when planning.
Collection, memorial sites and local traditions
The Historical and Ethnographic Collection of Mrkopalj opened in 2017 on the first floor of the cultural centre in the heart of Mrkopalj. It contains more than 550 historical photographs and approximately 200 old objects. Notable items include a document relating to the founding of the parish in 1771 and a 1933 design for the “Pod Vrhin” ski jump. Handmade skis, ski poles, snowshoes and a rescue sled complete the collection and illustrate the local history of skiing and winter.
The collection is listed as open Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 15:00; advance booking is mandatory. Check beforehand whether the collection is currently open to visitors. This lets you take the opening hours and booking requirement into account rather than assuming you can visit spontaneously.
Religious and historical memorial sites also shape the municipality. The Calvary in Mrkopalj consists of three crosses with bronze sculptures. Pilgrims visit the Church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows every year on the third Sunday in September. Matić poljana commemorates 26 soldiers who died in a snowstorm in February 1944 with 26 stones.
Further traces of history can be found around Mrkopalj: Fajeri is the remains of the old Karolina Road, dating from 1732. Fortica preserves the remains of an Old Croatian church from the 12th or 13th century. Together, these sites reflect engineering, ecclesiastical and poignant memorial history, without making them a single attraction.
Market and regional context
The green market in Mrkopalj is open year-round, with around a dozen local producers from Gorski Kotar represented there. Check the market schedule before your trip. This makes it easier to fit a market visit into your stay without assuming a particular visiting time.
The Primorje-Gorski Kotar County offers a broader regional perspective within the wider Kvarner Bay destination: its Natura 2000 network includes 111 areas and covers almost 75 percent of the land area and 16 percent of the sea area. The cultural and tourist route Putovima Frankopana also includes a total of 17 Frankopan castles and three religious sites in the county.
