The area of the Municipality of Klana has a distinctly high-mountain relief and landscape. Forested hills, mountain springs and dense forests characterize the surroundings; there are also archaeological and sacred sites, as well as hiking trails with varying stated durations. When planning your trip, you can combine scenery with cultural heritage or compare individual hikes by their described duration and difficulty.

Highlands and archaeological heritage

The Gradina archaeological site lies on a rocky hill directly above the center of Klana. Its highest point is 629 meters above sea level. Sections of the Liburnian Limes can also be located using specific place names: they lie in the hinterland of Studena and Ravno; individual sections are on Vranjeno Hill and in the Za presikom depression. This places several sections of the Roman defensive heritage in specific locations.

Another natural landmark is the Trstenik Valley, at an altitude of 960 meters, where a natural spring is located. Its availability may vary seasonally.

Sacred sites and local traditions

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel stands on a hill above Klana. It dates from the 17th century and has long been a gathering place for worshippers, especially on Michaelmas, September 29. The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes stands on the road between Studena and Klana and was built in 1904. On February 11, locals gather there for prayer and the rosary. If you plan your trip specifically around one of these dates, check the details for the relevant year.

Hiking trails by duration and character

There are at least 13 marked and maintained hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty in the Klana area. They lead through dense forests and peaceful meadows to scenic peaks and historic sites. Before setting out, check current trail conditions and the duration and difficulty ratings for your chosen hike.

The Klana–Pliš trail is of moderate difficulty and is listed as taking two hours. It follows a forest path to the scenic summit of Pliš, at an altitude of 933 meters. This gives the hike both a specific time estimate and a named summit as its destination.

The Klana–Kastav hiking trail starts in the center of Klana and passes through the village of Škalnica to Breza, where it joins the Kastav Srna hiking trail. The Klana–Škalnica section is listed as taking 1 hour and 30 minutes, Škalnica–Breza 1 hour and 15 minutes, and Breza–Kastav 2 hours. Unlike the Klana–Pliš trail, the Kastav trail is therefore divided into three time sections, making it easier to compare the estimated time required.

The Klana–Kastav trail offers a picturesque view of Kvarner Bay near the last houses in Klana. The viewpoint is a distinct landmark along the trail, in addition to the stage locations of Škalnica and Breza.

Summer culture and the regional context

Since 2017, Gradina has served as an open-air summer stage for various cultural programs. Individual programs may vary; if you want to include a performance in your plans, check the dates for the relevant season. Gljivijada is another example of a nature-focused program: the 2023 program included an educational forest walk with mushroom picking. If you are looking for an event like this, check whether one is scheduled during your travel dates.

Across the wider Kvarner Bay destination, the Putovima Frankopana cultural and tourist route in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County includes a total of 17 Frankopan castles and three sacred sites. This regional route adds a broader context for travel planning and exploring cultural heritage.
