Cultural sites and traces of history
Kula Turanj offers insight into the history of the area: at the end of the 16th century, it was built by a prince of the Zrinski family as a defensive structure against the Ottomans. The tower displays replicas of contemporary weapons, copies of maps and documents, and records about the history of the tower and Brod Moravice.
Piljdak is a stone signal pillar at the crossroads of the Brod Moravice–Moravička Sela–Maklen routes. According to local tradition, it served as a signal post during the Ottoman period: fires were lit to warn the population of their arrival. Near Kocijani, a marked trail follows an old cart track reinforced with stone. It was used during the time of the Zrinski family between Severin na Kupi and Brod na Kupi.
The DelaÄŤ House is the oldest surviving house in Gorski kotar and was built in 1644. Today, it serves as an ethnographic museum of traditional objects. Confirm visiting arrangements before your trip. Kolarnica offers another way to discover local culture: it is an exhibition space in a former workshop. Traditional crafts from the Brod Moravice area are presented there, including the making of wooden horse-drawn carts.
More recent cultural history is also present: the installation “Buna Bunar” by Japanese artist Akiko Sato is located in Gornji Kuti. Hand-carved doors on a well are part of the work, which was installed as part of Rijeka – European Capital of Culture 2020. In Podstene, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul acquired its present appearance during restoration in 1837.
The Hrvatska ÄŤitaonica sela Kuti was founded by residents in 1936 and has been run by volunteers since its establishment. Religious sites in Brod Moravice are also part of the Camino Gorski kotar. If you plan to follow this route, check trail conditions before setting off.
