Accommodation in Municipality of Nijemci
In the Municipality of Nijemci, cultural history, the Bosut landscape, cycling routes and birdwatching offer different travel themes. The local history museum and churches provide insights into history and architecture; the arboretum and Spačvanska šuma show the landscape on different scales.
Local History Museum and Historic Churches
The “Luka Natali” Local History Museum traces local history, from the origins of the settlement through the Middle Ages to more recent history and the Croatian War of Independence. It is located in the Pastoral Centre of the Nijemci parish in the town centre. The museum includes “Bakina soba” (“Grandmother’s Room”), an ethnographic space furnished in a traditional style with details from everyday life in the past. It brings together a broad historical overview and a look at specific aspects of daily life.
The parish church of St Catherine stands on the banks of the Bosut at the prehistoric archaeological site of Gradina. Built in the 14th century, it is a valuable cultural and historical monument. The Church of St Luke, also known as Gospa Lučička, offers a different architectural feature: it is a single-nave Gothic church with a polygonal apse and a distinctive wooden bell tower.
The Church of St Luke is three kilometres west of the village of Lipovac. An arm of the Spačva called Luka surrounds the entire church grounds for a distance of about two kilometres. At St Catherine’s, the location on Gradina and the age of the building shape its historical significance; at Gospa Lučička, the architectural form and surrounding river landscape are closely linked.
Bosut Banks and Forest Landscape
In the centre of Nijemci, Arboretum Park lies on the banks of the Bosut. Native plants are arranged there in a traditional style. A pavilion, benches, a fountain and a pergola provide places to relax, spend time and socialise. The park thus combines plant diversity with a landscaped place to linger.
Spačvanska šuma offers a very different scale of landscape. It is Croatia’s largest continuous pedunculate oak forest complex (Quercus robur L.), covering around 40,000 hectares. It also accounts for the largest share of the forested areas in the Municipality of Nijemci. The arboretum and Spačvanska šuma therefore represent two different ways of experiencing nature: an orderly collection of plants in the centre of Nijemci and an extensive oak forest.
Cycling Routes and Walking Tours
There are several types of routes to consider for a cycling trip. The “Srijem” cycling route passes through Nijemci and connects to the international Danube Cycle Route, which is part of EuroVelo 6. Two other routes also start and end in Nijemci: N01 “Poljima crnog zlata” and N02 “Tragom žitarica, uljarica i ptica močvarica”. N01 and N02 therefore have the same starting and finishing point, while the “Srijem” route is linked to an international connection via the Danube Cycle Route. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the current condition of the routes.
One option for walking is the five-kilometre “Idemo u Srijem” themed tourist trail. It runs from the centre of Nijemci to Sopotac. Information boards and rest areas with smart benches are among the trail’s facilities. Unlike the cycling routes, this information gives a specific indication of the length and course of a walking route.
Birdwatching and Horse Activities
The Nijemci Birdwatching Centre spans several locations in Nijemci. More than 80 bird species are found in the municipal area. For travel planning, this means that birdwatching is not limited to a single site but takes place at several locations throughout the municipality.
HORIS offers carriage rides across the Srijem plain and horseback rides through the region’s natural and unspoilt landscapes. HORIS also has a small stable for six horses. The activities differ mainly in how you get around: you can find out about either a carriage ride or a horseback ride. Booking arrangements may change, so please check them in advance.
A Tradition in Motion
During “Pokladno jahanje”, around 40 riders from surrounding settlements in the Municipality of Nijemci and from other municipalities in Vukovar-Srijem County ride through the streets in traditional dress, singing and celebrating. The number of participants and the route may vary. The tradition brings riders from different places together in a shared procession; no fixed date or exact event location is implied.
