Vukovar lies at the confluence of the Vuka and the Danube. It also offers museums, memorial sites and experiences by the water. For cycling travellers, Vukovar is part of the EuroVelo 6 European cycle route along the Danube. This lets you get to know the city through a range of themes: river landscapes, activity, culture and remembrance.

Riverside Landscapes and Excursions

The Vuka forms a natural boundary between the historic regions of Slavonia and Srijem. The Vukovarska Ada, a sandy island that serves as an excursion destination and bathing spot, lies on the Danube. Conditions there can vary seasonally, so take the time of year into account when planning a visit.

On the Danube, trips in small boats or traditional Vukovar boats, known as ÄŚikljes, are among the visitor activities on offer. This gives you the opportunity to consider different types of boats for a trip on the river.

Museums, Architecture and Remembrance

The Vukovar City Museum is housed in Eltz Castle. Its permanent exhibition covers a period of 8,000 years, offering a broad historical timeframe. The Homeland War Memorial Centre focuses on a different subject: it presents the exhibition “Sjećanje na Domovinski rat – Bitka za Vukovar.” The centre’s visitor programmes connect memorial sites in Vukovar.

The Vukovar Water Tower adds a technical and memorial monument to these themes. It is a protected cultural asset, stands 50.33 metres tall and was built between 1963 and 1968. Its height and construction period give the structure a specific architectural scale alongside its memorial significance.

The Museum of Vučedol Culture presents the oldest prehistoric four-wheeled vehicle. In the wider destination of Vukovar-Srijem, the museum is located at an archaeological site on the banks of the Danube; it conveys the site’s historical and archaeological significance through contemporary interpretation. The Vučedol archaeological site is in Vukovar-Srijem County, four kilometres downstream from Vukovar. In the wider destination of Vukovar-Srijem, the Old Cellars of Ilok are also located next to Odescalchi Castle. Hosts guide visitors through parts of the cellar complex and organise wine tastings; advance booking may be required.

Cycling and Information

Vukovar has four bicycle rest stops with tourist and service information. Minor repairs are also possible in Adica Forest Park. If you rely on a particular service, check what is currently available before setting out.
