Apševci brings together a long church history, the Bosut River and a named cycling route. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: you can get to know the town through its cultural history or focus on the river landscape and cycling routes.

The Bosut, an Excursion Destination and a Cycling Route

The Bosut flows through Apševci and shapes the local landscape. North of Lipovac, the confluence of the Spačva and the Bosut is considered a fishing spot; pike, carp and perch are caught there. There is also an excursion destination at the confluence, maintained by a local fishing association. The confluence is therefore a distinct point of reference for fishing and excursions.

The “Šumama Srijema” cycling route is listed as approximately 44 kilometres long. The municipal strategy plan describes its course from Podgrađe towards Apševci and then onward to the centre of Lipovac. It was scheduled to become fully operational in 2022. Check local route information before setting off. The “Sveta Katarina” excursion boat offers a way to explore the landscape along the Bosut in the area around Nijemci, Podgrađe, Apševci and Lipovac; confirm its availability locally before your trip.

Church and Local History

Apševci is home to the branch church of St. Elijah the Prophet (Sv. Ilija Prorok), built in 1805. The parish history also goes back a long way: Apševci has belonged to the Lipovac parish since 1784. The church can thus be understood within a local history that extends beyond its year of construction.

The restored Church of St. Elijah represents the community’s return from displacement and the post-war reconstruction. Recorded details about the church also include the blessing of new electric church bells. Together, these aspects make the church a point of reference for both religious history and the more recent history of the town.

Cultural Traditions in Apševci

The “Apševački veseljaci” cultural and artistic association was founded in the 1970s. It works to protect and preserve the region’s cultural identity, heritage and traditions. For travellers interested in local culture, the association’s purpose offers a concrete insight into the town’s cultural engagement.

One dated example is the folklore event “Raspjevani Apševci, rasplesani Apševački veseljaci” (“Singing Apševci, Dancing Apševački veseljaci”): it took place in the town centre in 2024, with more than 150 members of folklore associations taking part. If you would like to include an event in your trip plans, check the dates for your travel period.

The wider destination of Općina Nijemci also offers other regional points of reference. The “Srijem” cycling route passes through Nijemci and connects to the international Danube Cycle Route, which is part of EuroVelo 6. The N01 “Poljima crnog zlata” route and the N02 “Tragom žitarica, uljarica i ptica močvarica” route also start and end there. These details distinguish several route alignments and starting and ending points; check route conditions before setting out.

The local history museum “Luka Natali,” located in the pastoral centre of the Nijemci parish in the town centre, is part of Općina Nijemci’s cultural history. Its exhibits span the origins of the settlement, the Middle Ages, more recent history and the Homeland War. The museum also includes the ethnographic room “Bakina soba” (“Grandmother’s Room”), furnished in a traditional style with details from everyday life in the past.

Another regional historic site is the Church of St. Catherine on the banks of the Bosut. Built in the 14th century, it stands on the prehistoric archaeological site of Gradina. For a landscape-focused experience in the centre of Nijemci, Arboretum Park offers a different perspective: native plants are arranged there in a traditional style, and the park features a pavilion, benches, a fountain and a pergola.

The Spačvanska šuma is another notable feature of Općina Nijemci. It is Croatia’s largest continuous complex of pedunculate oak forest and covers approximately 40,000 hectares. It also makes up the largest share of the forested areas in the Municipality of Nijemci. Alongside the Bosut and the towns, forest landscapes and regional cultural history are therefore among the different themes to consider when planning a trip.
