Nijemci brings together waterside activities, nature observation, trails and local history. Around Sopotac and the Bosut, you’ll find a range of options to help plan your trip: an excursion spot with waterside activities, a themed walking trail and a garden in the town centre. The church and local history museum also offer insights into the town’s past.

Nature and Trails Around Nijemci

The Sopotac excursion site offers opportunities for birdwatching and fishing, a themed children’s playground, a boat landing and parking. Individual offerings may change. From Nijemci, you can reach Sopotac by boat, car, bus, bicycle, horse-drawn carriage, on horseback or on foot. Which option suits your plans depends on how you would like to make the journey.

A marked themed trail connects the centre of Nijemci with Sopotac. It is about 3.5 kilometres long and passes around 30 information boards and six smart benches. The trail focuses on the flora and fauna of Srijem. If you plan to follow the trail, check its condition locally.

The arboretum is also located in the centre of Nijemci, in a garden on the banks of the Bosut. Native ornamental and medicinal plants grow there, and the grounds include paths, seating, a pavilion, a fountain and a pergola. It is a pleasant place to take a break and watch birds. Its appearance changes with the seasons, so the garden looks different depending on when you visit.

Church and Museum

The central parish church of St Catherine of Alexandria is a Baroque church whose origins date back to the 14th century. It stands on the banks of the Bosut at the prehistoric archaeological site of Gradina. Traces of Roman architecture and graves associated with the Bijelo-Brdo culture have been found beneath the church. Access to archaeological remains may be restricted.

The “Luka Natali” Local History Museum is located in the pastoral centre of the Nijemci parish. It presents the history of the settlement and includes a traditional-style ethnographic room, as well as more than 700 cultural, historical and ethnographic objects. Opening hours may change; check visiting arrangements before your visit.
