Rivers and karst shape the landscape of Karlovac County, alongside outdoor activities and cultural sites in various places. The Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica and Dobra are among the region’s defining rivers. The examples below offer concrete starting points for exploring them.

Rivers and Karst Landscapes

Rastoke is an area in Slunj where the Slunjčica cascades over several tufa barriers and waterfalls before flowing into the Korana. The public circular promenade in Rastoke is open daily throughout the year. In the centre of Ogulin lies Đulin ponor, a 40-metre-deep fissure where the Dobra ends its above-ground course and disappears into the more than 16-kilometre-long Đula-Medvedica cave system.

Vrlovka Cave is also one of the county’s notable natural sites. It has been protected as a geomorphological natural monument since 1962. A length of 380 metres has been explored, of which 330 metres have been fitted out for visitors. Lake Sinjac lies near Plaški. Its confirmed depth is 203 metres, making it one of the deepest karst lakes in the world. Of its four sinkholes, Sinjac 1 is currently considered Croatia’s third-deepest explored “mountain eye.” Lake Sabljaci, meanwhile, is a 170-hectare reservoir on the Zagorska Mrežnica. There are 22 waterfalls in the area of Generalski Stol.

Cycling, Water and Activity

The county offers cyclists almost 700 kilometres of cycling routes. One specific route runs from Netretić via Vinski Vrh to Novigrad na Dobri, then continues towards the Dobra Valley. Those who prefer to get around on the water will find more than 200 kilometres of waterways for rafting, kayaking and canoeing. The two options also differ in scale: alongside a named cycling route are activities spread across a regional network of waterways.

Other options round out the range of activities: equestrian clubs in the county offer horseback riding in natural surroundings. Numerous bodies of water and a variety of fish species provide a basis for angling tourism. The well-maintained hiking trail to Vodenica starts in Kamanje. The “Vrlovka” mountaineering club maintains the trail, and the climb rewards hikers with a lovely view. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting off. Kamanje can be reached by train. The route runs alongside the Kupa River through a rocky, wooded gorge. For specific travel arrangements, it is advisable to check the current timetable.

Cultural Sites and Regional Experiences

Ivanina kuća bajke opened in Ogulin in 2013. This multimedia, interactive house presents the fairy tales of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, as well as tales by other Croatian and international fairy-tale writers. In Ozalj, the Old Town stands on a rocky outcrop above the Kupa; it is also home to a local history museum.

Another highlight is the wineries on the slopes of Ozalj, Draganić and Vivodina. They offer walks through vineyards, tastings accompanied by local delicacies, and conversations with winemakers who preserve the tradition. If you would like to visit a particular winery, it is best to arrange your visit in advance.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Hotel Search

When planning, it is useful to distinguish between a specific starting point and a regional activity: the hiking trail to Vodenica starts in Kamanje, while the cycling and water routes extend across the county. Consider whether you would like a particular place or an activity to shape your stay.
