The Dobra and Kupa rivers reveal two different sides of the Municipality of Netretić: the Dobra flows through the municipality, while the Kupa has both calm stretches and rapids, winding between fields and high, rocky banks. Cycling routes and buildings with a long history round out the picture.

Karst Landscape and Rivers

The municipality is part of the Karlovac Dinaric Karst. Numerous sinkholes, grassland and groves of birch, oak, beech, hornbeam and chestnut shape the landscape. Along the Kupa, calm stretches alternate with rapids; fields and high, rocky banks line the river. If you like to plan your trip around landscapes and rivers, you’ll find a variety of features here to include in your itinerary.

The historic Karolina Road also passes through the municipality. Its route is another point of reference for the region’s history.

Cycling Routes Through Netretić

Several mapped routes make the Municipality of Netretić an interesting destination for cyclists. The 18-kilometre Route 4, “Uz tok rijeke Mrežnice,” passes through Netretić along its recommended route. Route 8, “Karlovac–Pokuplje–Karlovac,” runs from Netretić via Vinski Vrh to Novigrad na Dobri. The two routes focus on different areas: for one, the stated total distance is a useful planning figure; for the other, the named places along the way are particularly helpful.

The Žakanje–Netretić–Žakanje cycling loop also leads to Netretić after passing through villages along the Kupa and offers views towards Slovenia. This gives you a choice between a circular route and routes with specifically named stages. Check the latest route information before setting out, as conditions may change.

Castle, Bridge and Churches

Among the most prominent historic buildings is the ruin of Stari grad Novigrad na Dobri Castle. The Frankopans built the castle and owned it until 1671. The Most na Dobri, one of Croatia’s oldest river bridges, is also located near Novigrad na Dobri. It is 122 metres long and has ten openings. The castle and bridge represent different facets of local history: the former Frankopan rule on the one hand, and a structure whose length and openings can be measured on the other.

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Novigrad na Dobri also brings together several building phases. It is one of the oldest churches in this part of Croatia and developed from a Gothic chapel built in the 15th century; it was given a Baroque style in the 17th century. Well-preserved murals were uncovered in the church beneath several layers of paint. On the richly painted vault, they depict dozens of angels playing medieval instruments. At Stari grad, an observation point has been set up on a fully completed tower, with views across the Dobra Valley.

Other buildings and ensembles classified as individual immovable cultural assets are located in several settlements across the municipality. These include the Church of St Leonard in Donje Prilišće, the Church of St Catherine and the parish manor house in Kunići Ribnički, as well as the Church of St Anthony in Rosopajnik and the Church of St George in Vukova Gorica. In Završje Netretićko, both the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the Chapel of St Joseph with its parish manor house are listed. They are joined by the rural cultural and historical complex of Donji Mrzljaki in Mrzljaki and the Strahovnjak farm complex in Vinski Vrh.

The parish church of St Mary Magdalene in Srednje Prilišće offers another historical reference point: it was built before the parish was founded in 1876 and consecrated in 1868. The dates make the chronology clear: the church was already standing before the parish was established.
