Vukova Gorica lies on the right bank of the Kupa and combines its connection to the river with a history of transport routes. Vukova Gorica is also situated on the Zagreb–Karlovac–Rijeka road. Churches and other cultural monuments add the town’s own history to this geographical perspective.

Riverside setting and historic transport routes

The historic Lujzijana Road connects Rijeka and Karlovac via Vukova Gorica; it was designed by Filip Vukasović. The town is also situated on the Zagreb–Karlovac–Rijeka road. This brings two distinct connections together: a historic link between the cities and the town’s location on the road. The Kupa complements this transport geography as the right riverbank and gives the town’s description a clear landscape connection.

Cultural heritage in Vukova Gorica

The Chapel of St. George stands on a rise above the Kupa and is designated as a viewpoint. It is also classified as protected cultural property in Croatia under the reference number Z-3090. The District Conference Building of the KPH in Vukova Gorica is likewise classified as protected cultural property. A memorial plaque on the house where the first KNOO session was held is recorded as cultural heritage; Vukova Gorica 2 is listed in the cultural heritage inventory as a traditional farmstead.

The area’s cultural history thus ranges from religious architecture and sites of political remembrance to traditional rural building culture. In 2023, a bilingual historical information board about Ivan Šubašić was installed beside the historic Lujzijana Road in Vukova Gorica, near the ruins of the estate associated with him.

Kupa, swimming spot and cycling route

Vukova Gorica is also designated as a summer swimming spot on the Kupa. The river is therefore not only a geographical landmark but also serves a seasonal recreational role for the town. One route starts in Vukova Gorica, passes through the three villages of Prilišće, continues to Ladešići, and includes a swimming stop on the Kupa. For cyclists, a self-guided route follows the historic Lujzijana Road along the river to Vukova Gorica; check the cycling route’s availability before setting out. The suggestions have different emphases: one connects several villages with a swimming stop, while the other follows a historic road and is designed as a cycling tour.

Općina Netretić: further cultural and landscape connections

The wider destination of Općina Netretić has additional cultural sites of its own. In Novigrad na Dobri stand the ruins of Stari grad Castle, which was built by the Frankopans and remained in their possession until 1671. Most na Dobri is one of Croatia’s oldest river bridges; it is 122 metres long and has ten openings. At the castle, the Frankopans’ history takes centre stage; at the bridge, its length and number of openings provide specific features for comparison. These examples place Vukova Gorica in a wider regional cultural context.

The landscape features should also be viewed at the level of Općina Netretić. The municipality is part of the Karlovac Dinaric karst, with sinkholes, grassland, and stands of birch, oak, beech, hornbeam and chestnut. In the Netretić area, the Kupa has both calm stretches and rapids, and flows between fields and high rocky banks. This regional setting complements Vukova Gorica’s immediate riverside location with a variety of river sections and landscape forms.
