The Municipality of Bosiljevo lies between the Kupa and Dobra rivers and at the entrance to Gorski Kotar. Karst landscapes and historic buildings shape the municipality’s character. Mount Družac reaches an elevation of 469 metres; the range of hills descends westward to the Kupa. The rivers and ridges give you clear reference points for the landscape, while the history of the Karolina road and the Old Town provide further local highlights.

Karst landscapes and the historic Karolina road

The Karolina road passes through Bosiljevo. It was built to connect Croatia’s inland regions with the Adriatic coast, particularly Karlovac and Rijeka. As a historic road, it links Karlovac and Bakar; it was built between 1726 and 1728. The information about its construction dates and connections explains two different aspects of the route: its origins and its former purpose.

For travellers interested in cycling, there is a time-specific point of reference: a 2018 article describes the Karolina road as suitable for cycling because of its light traffic and mountainous surroundings. Road surfaces and traffic conditions may change; check conditions before setting out.

Old Town, fortress and park forest

The Old Town of Bosiljevo is a monumental fortress on a hill above the village. It was built by the Frankopan family in the 15th century. The park forest surrounding the Old Town is designated as a monument of landscape architecture. The fortress and park forest thus represent two different aspects of the area: the architectural history of the Old Town and the landscape-architectural significance of its surroundings.

Stelnika is also part of the municipality’s historical landscape. The castle ruins lie northeast of Bosiljevo; the first written record dates from 1682. In 1820, Count Laval Nugent had a Neo-Renaissance castle with a park built near Stelnika. Rare and exotic tree species can still be found there today. These dates mark different historical points of reference, without equating the castle ruins with the later castle.

Church and religious traditions

The present-day Church of Saint Maurus in Bosiljevo was built between 1896 and 1905 and consecrated in 1913. The main feast of the Parish of St. Maurus is the Feast of Saint Vitus on 15 June; the major parish celebration takes place on the first Sunday thereafter. These are two separate dates: the main feast has a fixed date, while the parish celebration falls on the following Sunday.

In Vodena Draga, the feast of the patron saint, Saint Helena, is celebrated each year with a mass and a traditional pilgrimage. Together with the celebrations of the Parish of St. Maurus, this tradition illustrates another cultural aspect of the Municipality of Bosiljevo: religious celebrations are tied to specific saints’ feast days and local customs.

Kestenijada and regional products

The traditional Kestenijada was held on 11 October 2025 in Bosiljevo, on the sports field of PŠ Ivan Goran Kovačić. Offerings included roasted chestnuts as well as products from local family farms and small artisan businesses. The festival thus brings together chestnuts and agricultural and craft products. The date given refers to the 2025 event.

Further information: Karlovac County

More than 200 kilometres of waterways are available there for rafting, kayaking and canoeing. These regional activities complement the local highlights of the Karolina road and the karst landscape.

The availability of individual producers may change. The county thus offers additional themes to consider when choosing a destination, while Bosiljevo’s history, landscape and local traditions provide the specific local focus.
