The Municipality of Draganić offers points of interest for travelers interested in sacred architectural history, traditional customs and nature. You can plan your trip around the topics that interest you most locally.

Chapels, architectural history and cultural heritage

The present-day masonry chapel of Sveti Antun Pustinjak was built in 1703/04 on the site of a wooden chapel erected in 1671. This sequence makes it possible to trace two building phases at the site. The chapel of Sveti Fabijan i Sebastijan was built in the early 18th century and was already made of stone by 1704. It is considered a valuable example of simple sacred architecture in the Karlovac area.

The Chapel of Svetog Trojstva in Goljak Draganić is listed as protected cultural property under designation Z-274. Another historic sacred building is the old wooden Church of the Holy Trinity between Pyramid Hill and Sveti Juraj Hill. It dates from 1689 and is decorated with frescoes. The Draganić Pyramid is a pyramid-shaped hill above Draganić. These buildings offer different points of reference for exploring the area’s culture: building phases, frescoes and protected status are each topics in their own right.

Collection, dialect and traditional crafts

The Barice Turčić Ethnographic Collection in Lazina preserves household objects, tools, furniture and the traditional clothing of the Domladovac cooperative. It also features a domestic interior from the early 19th century, as well as traditional men’s and women’s clothing from Draganić. The collection brings together everyday objects, a historic domestic setting and clothing associated with the area.

Language and customs are also part of the municipality’s cultural identity. The Draganić dialect is included in Croatia’s Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage under entry number Z-7454. KUD Sv. Juraj Draganić preserves the customs, dances, songs and traditional clothing of Draganić’s farmers. A study from spring 2010 provides a historical link to local food culture: at the time, KUD conducted a study as part of a special program to preserve the craft of producing Draganić turkey.

Processions and dates

Every year on June 24, a procession takes place to the statue of Saint John the Baptist; the event has been held since 2007. Another procession is associated with the feast of Saint Nicholas: before the feast, residents walk from the Chapel of Sveti Fabijan i Sebastijan to the statue of Saint Nicholas in Lazina. The event includes prayers and a program for children. The monument and wayside shrine of Sveti Nikola are among the few statues dedicated to Saint Nicholas in continental Croatia.

The two customs differ in their timing: the first procession is held on June 24, while the second takes place before the feast of Saint Nicholas. If you would like to include a procession in your travel plans, check the current program locally.

Lowland forest and nature conservation

The historic educational trail through the Draganić lowland forest features fishponds and opportunities to observe wading birds. It also shares information about the traditional practice of fattening pigs on acorns. The trail thus combines nature observation with insight into a historic farming practice.

Ten information panels were installed in 2010 as part of the “Historic Educational Trail through the Draganić Forest” project. The trail was intended for practical lessons for pupils from Draganić Primary School and other schools. Separately, Ribnjaci Draganići, code HR 2000450, is an area within the ecological network in the Municipality of Draganić. For planning purposes, this distinguishes an educational and nature theme from the area’s designated protected status.

Getting oriented for your journey

The railway line from Zagreb to Rijeka runs through the municipality, as do the two railway stations, Draganić and Lazina. If you plan to travel by train, check the connections for your travel dates. Draganić is also on the road between Karlovac and Zagreb, known as the Old Road. This information provides geographical context for planning your journey without specifying a particular timetable or connection.
