This can help you decide whether cultural history, a shorter route or a longer walk is most important for your plans. A public viewpoint adds a specific view of the Meikensbossen and the Poelberg to the options.

Churches, a mill and historic uses

The parish church of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw en Sint-Stephanus is a neo-Gothic parish church built between 1854 and 1856; its older west tower dates from 1613. The gap of more than two centuries between the tower and the church building makes the different construction phases tangible in a single building. The Goethalsmolen offers a different focus: it is a grain and oil mill. It includes a runner stone and an oil cellar.

The Sint-Anna ruin also brings together a historic name and a new use. In 2023, it was converted into an event venue with a public viewing platform. The venue offers views of the Meikensbossen and the Poelberg. This brings together its current function as an event venue and views of the two named landscapes.

Two chapels are part of the annual Kapellekensomgang: the Annakapel and the Kapel Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Bezoeking. The procession takes place around mid-August. If you want to plan your trip around this recurring date, take the approximate time of year into account and check the date for the relevant year. The Kapel Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Bezoeking was probably built in the second half of the 19th century; according to cadastral records, it was built between 1894 and 1901.

Walking routes: length, waymarking and route

The waymarked Meikensbospad is 5 km long. The Baliekouter walking route is about 2.6 km, making it roughly half as long. Its route passes through a play forest and water-rich meadows, then follows the Mandelbeek on the return. The different lengths and the landscape features described offer concrete points of comparison when choosing a route for your plans.

The two blossom routes also differ in how they are marked. The 11 km Blossom Walking Route starts at JOC Dentergem and is marked with blue arrows. By contrast, the buggy-friendly Dentergem Blossom Route is not signposted and does not pass through the orchards. Length and waymarking are concrete selection criteria here, as is the route itself.

In summer 2024, a slow-traffic link opened between the bridge at Baliekouter on Ommegangstraat 11 and Domein Kloosterhof in the direction of Kapellestraat. The Poelberg–Meiskensbossen walking network runs through the hilly landscape on the border between Tielt and Dentergem. This border location places the network within a wider landscape context.

Green places to relax and historic buildings

The historic corner of Dreve and Statiestraat serves as a place to relax and meet for residents and visitors to Dentergem. The green space offers seating amid varied planting designed to attract bees and butterflies. Both its function as a place to relax and its design with these animals in mind are defining features of the site.

Another distinctive building complex is Brouwerijgoed. It consists of a house and a crosswise barn with a coach house dating from the 18th century. Together with the parish church, the mill and the Sint-Anna ruin, this example illustrates the range of building and land-use history that can be explored in Dentergem.
