Alveringem: Discover cultural heritage and cycling routes
Accommodation in Alveringem
Two specific perspectives present themselves for a trip to Alveringem: the heritage of the First World War and cycling routes with different starting points and themes. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether historical sites or a particular route should be the focus. The following sites and routes can be considered individually: the routes start at different addresses, while each historical site has its own connection to remembrance, architectural history or industrial history.
Memorial sites and architectural history
Kapelanij Verschaeve is an experience centre about Alveringem during the First World War. In Oeren, the Belgian Military Cemetery was established around the 16th-century Late Gothic church during the First World War. The churchyard of the Sint-Audomarus parish church in Alveringem also served as a memorial site: during the First World War, it was a war cemetery for Belgian soldiers who had fallen in battle. The historical focus thus includes both an experience centre and two specific church-related memorial sites. Oeren is associated with a 16th-century Late Gothic church, while Sint-Audomarus is defined by the use of its churchyard for fallen Belgian soldiers.
Mout- en Brouwhuis De Snoek represents a different era: it is the only 19th-century brewery in Flanders, Wallonia and French Flanders that has been completely preserved. The brewery thus complements the war sites with an example of industrial heritage. During a single stay, you can distinguish between different historical themes rather than associating every site with the First World War.
Stone installation and solstices
The circular stone installation Below Ground, Beyond Earth is located at the Klarewal archaeological site. It was completed in 2025 and lies two kilometres from the centre of Alveringem. Openings in the stones mark the sun’s most extreme positions on the horizon on two specific dates: 21 June at the summer solstice and 21 December at the winter solstice. The installation combines a distinctive stone structure with the recurring annual movement of the sun. If you are interested in architecture and astronomical connections, the interplay between the stone openings and the sun’s position offers a focus quite different from the war-related memorial sites.
Cycling routes with different starting points
The Aller-Retour cycling route starts at Hof van Wyckhuize at Sint-Rijkersstraat 19. It follows the arduous journey of soldiers from the army cantonment in Alveringem to the Dodengang in Diksmuide. The route therefore has a clear historical connection. The IJzerbroeken cycling route starts at Toerisme Alveringem, also at Sint-Rijkersstraat 19. The children’s cycling route “Met Jaek en Nink door het vlakke land” starts at the Brewery Museum at Fortem 40. Municipal route details may be revised, so check the latest information before setting off.
The Korte keten route focuses on local producers and picnic options. It runs through Alveringem and makes these offerings accessible to visitors. Participating producers and picnic arrangements may change. The peace trail “Onder de lindeboom” offers a different theme: it connects fourteen summer lime trees in various villages in the Alveringem area. This means you can consider a route centred on producers and picnic options and a peace trail featuring several lime trees as two different travel ideas.
The cycling infrastructure also provides a specific local connection: as part of a land consolidation project, a separate cycle path was built between the N8 and the village of Alveringem. The project aimed to create safer cycling links between several sub-municipalities. The paved, winding Oerenstraat is also useful for finding your way between Alveringem-Dorp and Oeren; it connects the two places.
