In Zonnebeke, you can choose from a range of interests: First World War history, memorial sites, cycling or fishing. The Passchendaele Museum is dedicated to the history of the war, and especially to the Battle of Passchendaele. The gardens, a view over the former battlefield and routes with different cycling themes offer further insights.

Passchendaele Museum and the First World War

The Passchendaele Museum presents the history of the First World War, with a particular focus on the Battle of Passchendaele. The museum features a dugout experience, visualisations of the landscape in 1917, and reconstructed German and British trenches. These bring different aspects together: the visualisations relate to a specific landscape and year, while the reconstructed trenches represent the German and British sides. The dugout experience adds another element to the museum.

Abbey and memorial sites

In the Abdijtuin, different paving patterns make it possible to distinguish six construction phases of the Zonnebeke Augustinian Abbey. The differences in the paving make the construction phases a visible feature of the garden. If you are interested in architecture and historical development, you can see here that the abbey was built in several phases.

The Parkwandeling leads to the Passchendaele Memorial Gardens: eight poppy-shaped gardens commemorate nations that fought in the region during the First World War. The poppy shape and the dedication to the nations represent two distinct aspects of remembrance. The Scottish Memorial grounds offer a different perspective on the wartime landscape. From there, the view extends over the former battlefield where the fighting took place. While the gardens focus on their shapes and commemorative purpose, the view from the Scottish Memorial focuses on the terrain of the former battlefield.

Cycling and the wine route

Three of the nine Flemish Icoonfietsroutes pass through Zonnebeke. For these routes, the specific point of interest is the number that pass through the municipality. The Weinbelevingsfietsroute, by contrast, features three loops that can be combined with one another, measuring 24, 21 and 25 kilometres. In order of length, these are a 21-kilometre loop, a 24-kilometre loop and a 25-kilometre loop; there is a four-kilometre difference between the shortest and the longest. This lets you compare the loops by distance and combine several of them.

The Weinbelevingsfietsroute connects local wineries with leisure and invites you to stop for a tasting of Westhoekwijn along the way. This adds a wine theme to the cycling experience. If you would like to consider this thematic focus as well as the route length, the Weinbelevingsfietsroute offers a specific option.

Fishing at the Kasteelvijver

The Kasteelvijver in Zonnebeke offers an opportunity to fish in surroundings shaped by greenery and history. This is different from the cycling routes and memorial sites: here, the focus is on fishing at the pond in its green, historic setting. So, alongside the museum, memorial sites and cycling, Zonnebeke’s range of activities also includes an option for people interested in fishing.
