Knokke-Heist offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: a landscape of mudflats and salt marshes, art, architecture and seasonal water sports. The places and activities below offer different highlights: in the Zwinvlakte, two similarly long loops wind through a distinctive landscape; at Scharpoord, architecture and garden design come together; and at the Peiremuzee, an immersive installation takes centre stage.

Nature, Architecture and Sport

In the Zwinvlakte, a green loop measuring 1.9 kilometres and a blue loop measuring 2 kilometres wind through mudflats and salt marshes. The figures make for a direct comparison: the blue loop is 100 metres longer, and both pass through the same types of landscape. So if you choose a route based on its length, the options are close in distance; there is no major difference between them.

Scharpoord is an iconic example of functional architecture in Flanders and was built between 1970 and 1974. The surrounding landscape includes a 20,000 m² garden designed by landscape architect Paul Deroose. This offers two distinct perspectives on the same place: the building can be understood in functional terms, while the garden adds a specially designed landscape.

Knokke-Heist’s sports beach locations are on the beach opposite Rubensplein in Knokke and Kardinaal Mercierstraat in Heist. They are freely accessible in summer. Experienced monitors advise visitors and accompany them during sports activities. Six water sports clubs offer opportunities for surfing, sailing, rafting and kitesurfing. The municipal information on these facilities applies to 2026; please check the applicable information for later seasons.

Art and Museum Visits

The Peiremuzee at De Judestraat 64, 8300 Knokke-Heist, is Luc Peire’s former home. During a visit, you can discover Environment, Luc Peire’s iconic immersive installation. It is complemented by an exceptional presentation of an installation by Jean-Paul Laenen from the Mu.ZEE collection. A work by Luc Peire and a presentation from a collection thus share the same visitor setting.

The For Freedom Museum depicts the sombre period of the Second World War in a vivid and realistic way. Those wishing to include history as well as art in their stay will find a distinct focus here. The two museums therefore turn to different subjects: installations take centre stage at the Peiremuzee, while the For Freedom Museum presents the wartime period.

Architectural Heritage and Events

The tower of the former Sint-Margaretakerk was built around the second half of the 13th century. The Dominicanenkerk, by contrast, is an ensemble: its Neo-Romanesque monastery complex consists of a church and cloister set within a surrounding garden. The Dominicanenkerk, including its cloister, garden and presbytery, is a protected monument. The examples therefore differ both in scale and in the kind of architecture they represent: one is a single tower, the other a protected monastery complex.

Events also connect culture with specific places. The programme for the 2026 Carnival in Heist included a fishermen’s mass and a floral tribute at Sint-Antoniuskerk, followed by a commemoration at Vissershuldeplein. If you are planning to visit in a later year, check the relevant dates. The 2026 edition of the Zoute Beach Flower Festival brought the Belgian tradition of paper flowers to the beach in Knokke-Heist. This tradition has been recognised as intangible cultural heritage since 2021. If you would like to include one of these events in your travel plans, check the dates for your chosen period.
