Duinbergen: Hotels, Dune Landscape and Architectural Heritage
Accommodation in Duinbergen
In Duinbergen, the coastal landscape, garden village and architectural history each shape a different aspect of your stay. The original dune formations have been preserved, and the highest dune crests offer impressive views over the sea. When looking for a hotel, you can decide whether dunes, architectural heritage or sailing activities should play the biggest part in your stay.
Dunes and Coastal Area
The winding streets of the garden village lead over the dunes to green parks. Park 58 encompasses species-rich dune grasslands with numerous flowering plants, including large thyme, bladder campion, dune rue and broomrape. Pergolas have been preserved at both the Elizabetlaan and Arcadelaan entrances to the park. At the level of Lentelaan, a wooden boardwalk runs along the beach. Zeedijk-Duinbergen includes a promenade with a separate lane for cyclists. The dune crests and Park 58 provide different landscape highlights: the highest crests offer views over the sea, while species-rich dune grasslands and flowering plants shape the landscape in the park.
Architectural Heritage: Chapel and Villa
The Christ the King Chapel is a protected monument. It is a well-preserved neo-Gothic chapel with a Neo-Romanesque interior. The building was commissioned by S.A. de Duinbergen and designed by architect Jozef Viérin in two phases: the chapel and presbytery on Duinbergenlaan were built in 1905; a major extension followed in 1929, with a winter chapel and presbytery on Duinendreef. The two dates mark the original complex and a later extension.
Another example is the semi-detached villa at Duinbergenlaan 72–74, with two residential units. Its design combines the Cottage style with features of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Paul Cauchie designed the building as holiday accommodation. In contrast to the chapel, it represents a different type of building: sacred architecture on the one hand, and a villa for holiday accommodation on the other.
Sailing Activities
RBSC Duinbergen offers catamaran training at its beach club. The club also holds sailing camps for children aged seven to 17 from Monday to Friday in July and August. The training arrangements, as well as camp dates and age requirements, may change. Check the latest information with the club before making plans.
Routes and Getting There
The Duinbergen Heritage Walking Route starts at Joseph Stübben Park on Brieshelling in 8301 Duinbergen. The route has been assessed for surface conditions and potential obstacles such as narrow sections, gradients and thresholds. These features offer concrete points to consider when planning your own route.
The easiest way to reach Duinbergen is via the Heist exit on the A11 and Heistlaan. Road conditions and traffic regulations may change, so check them before you travel.
