Steyr-Land: Discover Nature Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Steyr-Land
Hiking trails, cultural heritage and special places to visit shape the many ways to discover Steyr-Land. Your planned activities can influence where you stay: in the Reichraminger Hintergebirge, trails lead to specific destinations, while elsewhere the focus is on landscapes, historic sites or regional craft traditions. The following routes and reasons to visit offer ideas for shaping your time here around your own interests.
Hiking Trails and Landscapes
The access to the national park via the turnoff at 4462 Reichraming leads to the Anzenbach hiking area. From there, the Wildnistrail Buchensteig route runs through the Reichraminger Hintergebirge to the Wilder Graben and back. The Luchs Trail also passes through Reichraming. For the Buchensteig, Anzenbach and the Wilder Graben are named as points along the outward and return route; for the Luchs Trail, Reichraming is the local reference point. This distinguishes the two trails by their respective route details.
The Wildbach Erlebnisweg focuses on the work of the Torrent and Avalanche Control Service at five stations. Information boards and interactive features present the subject in a playful, creative and informative way. In Weyer, the Kreuzberg nature reserve offers many opportunities for hiking and walking. Quiet trails follow the clear Reichramingbach stream, inviting visitors to linger by the water and immerse themselves in its cool waters.
Those interested in a viewpoint can visit the summit of Beisteinmauer at an elevation of 632 metres; from there, the view extends across the Enns Valley. The Trattenbach climbing centre includes climbing routes on the face of Beisteinmauer and on the WeiĂźensteinerwand climbing crag. Beisteinmauer therefore offers two distinct attractions: views from the summit and climbing routes. The Burgberg in Losenstein, meanwhile, is a valuable natural area with ravine forests and surrounding meadows, and is protected.
Cultural Heritage and Special Experiences
Several places and attractions offer different ways to explore the region’s history. Losenstein Castle Ruins are among the oldest castle complexes in Upper Austria. Opened in 2013, the Heiligenstein themed trail leads past several stops in and around Sebalduskirche and presents the history of the mountain shrine, its importance as a pilgrimage site and the life of Saint Sebald. Maria Neustift Pilgrimage Church houses an almost life-size statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1450. Church tours are available by prior arrangement with the parish office.
Traditional craftsmanship takes centre stage at the Trattenbach pocketknife-making workshop: in 2015, the tradition was recognised as intangible cultural heritage by the Austrian Commission for UNESCO. Brandstätter Hammer houses the world’s largest collection of hand-forged nails. Both examples highlight traditional production methods and historic crafts, while the castle and themed trail explore religious history.
The Virtual Whitewater experience uses augmented reality on a smartphone or tablet to bring back to life a historically significant mining settlement in the Reichraminger Hintergebirge that was demolished in the 1960s. The virtual experience covers around 800 metres along the Hintergebirgsradweg cycle path. The Steyrtal Museumsbahn offers a different point in time and a different landscape: Austria’s oldest narrow-gauge railway runs along a 17-kilometre route from Grünburg to Steyr through the wild and romantic floodplain landscape of the Steyr River.
Visitor Information and Accommodation Planning
The Ennstal Visitor Centre is located between Reichraming and Großraming, right on the Enns River. It houses the “Wunderwelt Waldwildnis” exhibition. Opening hours at the gallery in Prevenhuber House are also subject to a condition: during exhibitions, it is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Check opening hours before you travel if you plan to visit the gallery.
The Sebaldus shuttle may be important for your accommodation planning if your trip includes stages in the locations it serves. It runs between GroĂźraming, Losenstein, Laussa, Maria Neustift, Gaflenz and Weyer, taking guests between the stages and their accommodation. Check the operating details before you travel. The Sebaldus Tour is described as running mainly on cycle paths, quiet side roads and well-maintained farm tracks.
If you plan to visit specific facilities, check the latest information before your visit. This will help you plan your day around the activities that matter most to you and take any relevant visiting requirements into account in good time.
