Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr combines hiking destinations on the Damberg with notable sites connected to the history of peace. In the town center, the Friedensdenkmal (Peace Monument) shapes the appearance of the community; on the Damberg are the Laurenzikapelle and the Dambergwarte. This offers a choice of different focuses when planning a stay: a hike with views, local history, or both.

Hiking on the Damberg

At 811 meters, the Damberg is the local mountain of Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr. The 36-meter-high Dambergwarte observation tower stands on its summit, offering wide-ranging views across the foothills of the Alps and the Alpine foothills. The current tower opened on October 1, 1972; observation towers had already stood at this location before then. It was renovated in 2014.

If you are looking for a short hike, consider the hiking loop to the Dambergwarte and Laurenzikapelle. It offers views over the city of Steyr and into Kalkalpen National Park. Another option is the Schwarzberg circular hiking trail from St. Ulrich: it starts and ends in Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr, runs along the Sonnberg, crosses the Schwarzberg and passes the Dambergwarte. The short loop is described by the viewpoints mentioned, while the Schwarzberg loop’s route can be traced through several named stops.

The Laurenzikapelle is on the Damberg. From the Schoiber car park, you can reach it on foot in ten minutes. Sankt Ulrich also has well-marked hiking trails through largely untouched nature. As conditions on individual trails may change, it is advisable to check the latest trail conditions before setting out.

A history of peace and the townscape

In 1982, Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr was declared the world’s first Peace Community. The town also hosted the 1st International Conference of Mayors for Peace through the Solidarity of Cities and Communities. The Friedensdenkmal stands in the town center and gives this history a tangible presence in the townscape. The parish church of St. Ulrich provides another prominent landmark: it stands on a hill above the Enns Valley.

Trails connected with the Friedensdenkmal start either at the monument or at the church square in Kleinraming and meet at the Dambergwarte. The monument is therefore not only a place in the center, but also a starting point for trails leading to the Damberg. The observation tower, chapel and parish church each offer a different focus: the landscape, a destination on the mountain, and the townscape above the Enns Valley.
