In Reichraming, you can tailor your stay to different interests: hiking and cycling, scenic experiences, or insights into the history of timber workers and brass production. The attractions range from a family-friendly circular trail through near-natural beech forests to museums with specific exhibits. The stream, landscape park and historical traces on Schieferstein each add their own distinctive character.

Hiking and cycling in the countryside

The approximately six-kilometre circular trail “Im Tal des Holzes” (In the Valley of Wood) leads through the valuable ecosystem of near-natural beech forests in Kalkalpen National Park. It is rated as family-friendly. The national park protects Austria’s largest wilderness area in the heavily karstified Sengsen and the rugged Reichraminger Hintergebirge. The trail therefore combines a manageable distance with a natural environment whose forest landscape is its particular focus.

Several alpine pastures and huts also offer different options for hiking. Anlaufalm in Kalkalpen National Park is a destination for hikers and mountain bikers; from there, you can enjoy a view of Größtenberg in the Hintergebirge. Ebenforstalm is named as a hiking destination and offers views over the Reichraminger Hintergebirge and the Sengsengebirge. At Hohe Dirn, Anton-Schosser-Hütte is an outing for the whole family and also a starting point for short to medium-length circular hikes.

Specific route details are also provided for cycling: the Hintergebirge Cycle Route follows the route of the former forest railway, with gentle gradients as far as Weißwasser. From Reichraming’s village square, the cycle route initially follows a paved local road with very little climbing. The “L4 Bahnhof Reichraming – Schieferstein” tour starts at Reichraming station.

The history of timber work and brass

The Holzknecht Museum Reichraming is housed in the former Wallerhütte. The hut once served as an evening meeting place for timber workers. The museum explores their way of life and work in the 19th and 20th centuries; tools, models and images offer various insights. The place itself and the objects on display each provide their own point of connection to the history of timber workers.

The Brass Museum focuses on production and the workforce. Its centrepiece is a model of the brass factory at a scale of 1:10, made based on an 18th-century painting. Across several stations, the model explains the brass-making process in Reichraming. The museum also presents the factory’s economic history, as well as the achievements and culture of its workforce. On Schieferstein, you can also see mining pits from medieval iron ore extraction.

Another historical stop is Klaushütte: built in 1758, it once served as accommodation for forestry workers. Together with the Holzknecht Museum and the Brass Museum, it offers a look at different aspects of the region’s working history—from forestry and the lives of timber workers to brass production.

Stream, landscape park and excursions

ARENA SCHALLAU is a landscape park on the banks of the wild Reichramingbach stream, on the site of a former timber-floating facility. Activities offered there include climbing, cycling, stream hiking and beach volleyball. In summer, the clear water of Reichramingbach invites you to swim; conditions may vary by season. Horse-drawn carriage rides, with a hearty snack, follow the Ramingbach into the Reichraminger Hintergebirge. Check whether the rides are available before your trip.

The Ennstal Visitor Centre is located between Reichraming and Großraming. It provides information on hiking and mountain biking routes, themed trails, the opening hours of alpine pastures and huts, and regional excursions. The exhibition includes “Wunderwelt Waldwildnis” (Wonderland of Forest Wilderness). Check the visitor centre’s current programmes and operating details before your trip.
