When planning a stay in Ternberg, there are several themes to choose from: religious and craft history, nature along the banks of the Enns, or sporting facilities. If you are looking for a hotel in Ternberg, these highlights can help you tailor your visit to your interests.

Church, knife-making tradition and local history

Ternberg Church was first mentioned in a document around 1100 and was owned by Garsten Abbey at the time. In Ternberg Parish Church, the large altarpiece depicts the Resurrection of Christ. The early mention and the painting offer two different insights into the town’s religious history and art.

The Trattenbach knife-making families are the focus of the “Museum in der Wegscheid” in the Trattenbach Museum Village. The museum presents artifacts from their everyday lives and history. A hands-on complement is offered by the visitor workshop at “Drechslerei am Erlach”: there, visitors can assemble, paint and personalize with a name the handles for the “Neuer Trattenbacher” knife themselves. Trattenbach pocket-knife production was recognized as intangible cultural heritage by the Austrian UNESCO Commission in 2015.

Local history also includes the former satellite camp of Mauthausen concentration camp in Ternberg. The former kitchen barrack is the last surviving building of the concentration and labor camp established in 1942 for the construction of the hydroelectric power station in Ternberg. A memorial service organized by a local initiative is held at the former satellite camp once a year, usually in early October. If you would like to attend, check the specific date, as it varies from year to year.

Nature along the banks of the Enns and sporting activities

The Nature Activity Trail along the banks of the Enns offers insights into the animal and plant life near the riverbed. Beavers, wood ants and waterbirds live in this habitat. This offers a different focus from the cultural sites: here, attention turns to nature and its waterside habitats.

Ternberg Pump Track offers 610 m² of free riding fun. Its 170-metre all-round main track includes a jump line and can be used with mountain bikes, BMX bikes, scooters, roller skates and skateboards.

The Trattenbach via ferrata offers a different kind of outing. It is part of the “Naturfreunde Klettersteige Beisteinmauer” and leads up the upper face of Beisteinmauer to the summit via a long suspension bridge and a spectacular aluminum ladder. There is a public parking lot by Trattenbach railway station; from there, it is about a 20–30-minute walk to the via ferrata. Treat this as an approximate time, as local conditions may change.

The activities can be distinguished by their respective focus: the Nature Activity Trail draws attention to animal and plant life, the pump track to several types of cycling and wheeled sports, and the via ferrata to the ascent via suspension bridge and aluminum ladder. Together with the church, museum and workshop, Ternberg offers a range of ways to explore the area, without any one theme having to define your visit.
