Obergrünburg: Church, Haunold Mill and Steyr Gorge
Accommodation in Obergrünburg
If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Obergrünburg, you can shape your stay around three distinct features of the area: its church and chapel history, Haunold Mill, and the landscape of Steyr Gorge. There are also two hiking descriptions with different points of reference. Obergrünburg thus offers a cultural and historical setting and a natural landscape, allowing you to choose the focus of your stay based on specific interests.
Church and chapel history
Grünburg Parish Church is dedicated to Saint George. It is picturesquely situated on a hill on the left bank of the Steyr River in the cadastral municipality of Obergrünburg. Another link to the area’s history is the Chapel of the Cross: a castle once stood in Obergrünburg, and Duke Albrecht III besieged it along with Leonstein in 1390. Its foundations were used in 1792 to build the Chapel of the Cross. The Baroque altar from Grünburg Parish Church is also now in the Chapel of the Cross. The historical story thus stretches from the medieval siege through the later reuse of the castle foundations to the altar’s present location.
Haunold Mill through the ages
Haunold Mill is located in Obergrünburg, in the Steyr Gorge nature reserve. Its history can be traced through two precise dates: it was first mentioned in 1599 in the land register of the Lordship of Steyr; in 1840, it was converted into a sheet-metal and rolling mill. The conversion thus marked a change in how the site was used. The distinctive setting of Haunold Mill was also one reason it was chosen as a filming location. Industrial development and use in film productions therefore stand side by side as two different aspects.
Steyr Gorge and cultural landscape
Between Agonitz and Obergrünburg, Steyr Gorge features conglomerate gorges that have remained very close to their natural state. They are 30 to 50 metres deep and 100 to 200 metres wide. Gravel banks and islands provide habitat for wildlife, including the common kingfisher. The measurements describe the scale of the gorge, while the gravel banks and islands point to an ecological aspect of the area.
The cultural landscape around Obergrünburg also includes intensively mown meadows, nutrient-poor slopes, some with fruit trees, and terraced slopes with some young spruce plantations. A nutrient-poor slope rich in brome grass is home to the pink of the genus Dianthus (Dianthus carthusianorum) and meadow sage. Alongside the gorge’s landforms, there are also specific meadows, slopes and plants that convey a different aspect of the landscape.
Hiking trails with different features
For a hike connected with Haunold Mill, the R 802 Steinbach circular trail is one specific option: the mill in Obergrünburg is a starting point, and the route passes through Steinbach/Steyr. The “Großer und Kleiner Landsberg” trail has different features. It is a summit and circular route with a short scrambling section; sure-footedness and a head for heights are required. The comparison is therefore based on the route details given: the R 802’s starting point and course, and the Landsberg trail’s route type and climbing requirements.
