When looking for a hotel in Hinterstoder, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: skiing, hiking trails, scenery or culture. Hinterstoder lies in the headwaters of the Steyr River at the foot of GroĂźer Priel, Kleiner Priel and Spitzmauer. The Stodertal is a pronounced glacial trough valley with remnants of a pre-glacial valley floor. These landscape features provide the setting for the different experiences you can compare when planning your trip.

Landscape and Notable Places

Schiederweiher was built in 1902 by the imperial and royal court architect Schieder and is a recreation area in the Stodertal for locals and visitors. It is also a well-known hiking destination: a very easy route leads from the tourist office in Hinterstoder to the pond. Route information may change; check locally before setting out. The landscape can also be viewed from Jaidhauser-Aussicht. There are benches where you can rest and enjoy views over Hinterstoder.

The Höss Alpine Circuit reaches an elevation of 2,000 metres, has two viewing platforms and offers a 360° mountain panorama. Access to the platforms may depend on the weather and trail conditions. Alongside views of the valley and village, this provides a panorama at a higher elevation to use as a reference when planning your trip.

Ski Area and Seasonal Experiences

The Hutterer Höss ski area offers 40 kilometres of slopes and 14 lifts between 600 and 2,000 metres above sea level. Facilities in the Hinterstoder ski area include the Hannes Trinkl World Cup slope and a permanent race course. Infrastructure and published figures may change; check the latest information and operating status before your trip. The SNOWtrail is a family adventure slope with a wave track, banked turns and obstacles. Its operation may vary by season.

For a summer trip, the Hinterstoder Summer Adventure World at Löger Hütt'n has a gold-panning station where you can search for gemstones. This activity is also seasonal, and availability may change. The activities therefore differ clearly by season: the slopes and race course are part of the ski area, while the gold-panning station is part of the Summer Adventure World.

Hiking Trails and Historic Routes

The Flötzersteig follows historic routes from St. Pankraz to the source of the Steyr and reaches the village centre of Hinterstoder. Many sections still follow the old paths used by the historic timber rafters. The Stromboding waterfall was a key point for the rafters. Check the route and trail conditions before hiking.

Another tour starts at the Gasthof Jaidhof and follows a circular hiking trail to Jaidhauser-Aussicht and the Hubertus Chapel, then returns to the starting point. By comparison, the route from the tourist office to Schiederweiher is described primarily as very easy. This gives you the choice between a circular trail with a viewpoint and chapel and a hike specifically described as very easy, without assuming a walking time or distance.

During the hiking season, the Tälerbus connects the village with the hiking areas in Polsterlucke and Dietlgut, and runs as far as Baumschlagerreith. If you plan to use this service for your hike, check the current timetable.

Culture and Cave Experience

The Alpineum Hinterstoder tells the story of the Stodertal and traces the development of skiing from its beginnings to today’s World Cup. Tours are also available by request outside opening hours; ask about this option in advance. The Alpineum offers a cultural perspective on the valley and the history of skiing. The Catholic Parish Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in Hinterstoder is a protected monument.

Kreidelucke near Hinterstoder is a natural cave without walkways or artificial lighting. Entry is generally prohibited; you can experience it at close quarters only as part of a seasonal tour, subject to the operating conditions of the national park. If the cave is part of your plans, check the tour conditions in advance. Along with the museum, church and historic trails, it adds further cultural and historical themes to Hinterstoder’s focus on nature and sport.

Landscape spots such as Schiederweiher, the Alpineum and the historic trails offer different highlights. Before finalising your trip, check timetables, tour conditions and current operating status for activities that depend on specific times or seasons.
