Discover Rosenau am Hengstpaß
Accommodation in Rosenau Am Hengstpaß
Large parts of the municipality of Rosenau am Hengstpaß lie in Kalkalpen National Park. When planning your trip, you can also consider the location at the pass, winter activities, alpine pasture hikes, and local cultural history. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can start by deciding which of these themes you would like to shape your days. The specific places and times help you distinguish activities with different starting points.
Pass location and orientation
Rosenau am Hengstpaß is located on the Hengstpaßstraße. The road over the Hengst Pass connects the Garstnertal via the Dambach and Laussa valleys with the Styrian Enns Valley. The Nationalpark Hengstpaßhütte is located right at the pass summit. From the Hengstpaßhöhe parking lot at the National Park information point at the Hengstpaßhütte, you can reach the Menaueralm on foot in about 40 minutes. The alpine pasture is located in Rosenau am Hengstpaß at an elevation of 1,125 m. This gives you two distinct points of reference: the road connection through several valleys and a specific walking route from the named parking lot to an alpine pasture.
Winter activities at Hengst Pass
The area around Hengst Pass offers many opportunities for snowshoeing and ski touring in winter. The Pyhrn-Priel – Rosenau am Hengstpaß biathlon and cross-country skiing arena lies at the foot of Hengst Pass in Kalkalpen National Park. It has more than 15 kilometres of exceptionally well-maintained cross-country ski trails, some of which are snow-covered; snow conditions vary by season. When planning winter activities, the locations differ according to the activity: the arena is a specific reference point for cross-country skiing, while snowshoeing and ski touring take place in the area around Hengst Pass.
Alpine pastures, flowering season, and hiking times
The Spitzenbergeralm is located at an elevation of 1,000 m in Kalkalpen National Park. Its alpine pasture area is botanically interesting; orchids bloom there in June. A hiking route leads from the pasture to Schwarzkogel (1,550 Hm); the ascent takes about 1¼ hours. The Laussabaueralm is also in Kalkalpen National Park, in the municipality of Rosenau am Hengstpaß, at an elevation of 780 m between the Kampermauer nature reserve and the Haller Mauern. At 780 m, it is lower than the Spitzenbergeralm at 1,000 m; the two alpine pastures also differ in their respective landscape settings.
When planning your time, it is worth noting the starting point for each route: the approximately 40 minutes refers to the walk from the Hengstpaßhöhe parking lot to the Menaueralm, while the roughly 1¼ hours refers to the ascent from the Spitzenbergeralm to Schwarzkogel. These are different activities with different time estimates.
Local tradition and other activities
The Rosenau traditional costume was created in 1989; its model was a depiction of an “Almerin” (a woman working at an alpine pasture) on a shooting target from 1817. The two years have different roles: 1817 dates the image, while 1989 marks the creation of the costume. This makes it possible to distinguish the historical model from the later local creation. Fishing is possible at the Lamberger Teiche in Innerrosenau; the ponds are on the route to the biathlon centre.
