When looking for a hotel in Spital am Pyhrn, you can first decide whether your trip will focus more on nature trails, church art or winter activities. The local destinations offer different highlights and provide concrete points of reference for planning your trip.

Nature Trails and Winter Activities

The Spital am Pyhrn water nature trail runs for around five kilometres between the town centre and the valley station of the Wurzeralm funicular. It is well developed and easy to walk for visitors of all ages. Eleven information panels cover the local flora and fauna, geology and ecological connections. The trail thus combines a clearly defined route with several nature-related topics to discover along the way.

The Wurzeralm Nature Experience World offers a different focus: its route circles Teichlboden, the largest lowland and raised moor in the Northern Limestone Alps. Eight experience stations explore geology, alpine farming, moors and karst. The two nature attractions differ both in the topics covered and in how they are presented: the water nature trail has eleven information panels, while the Nature Experience World has eight experience stations.

For winter days, the Wurzeralm ski area offers winter hiking, cross-country skiing, ski touring and snowshoeing in addition to downhill skiing. Its range of activities therefore extends beyond skiing. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular type of activity, you can take these options into account.

Craftsmanship and Church Art

The Lindermayr horseshoe and hoe forge was established after 1300 and served as the court forge of Spital am Pyhrn Abbey for more than 500 years. Its long-standing role as the court forge adds a craft dimension to the abbey’s history. The cultural focus of your stay can therefore include not only churches and art, but also the history of a forge.

The church of the former Spital am Pyhrn Abbey was remodelled in the Baroque style by Johann Michael Prunner from 1714 to 1730. In Pyhrn Cathedral, the frescoes by Bartolomeo Altomonte in the presbytery are considered a highlight of Baroque church painting in Upper Austria. The grille made by Andreas Ferdinand Lindermayr is also among the featured artworks: it is considered one of Austria’s finest iron artworks. These examples offer different highlights—fresco painting in the presbytery and artistic ironwork.
