Rossleithen combines nature-themed attractions with trails that highlight the landscape and scythe-making. As a national park municipality, parts of the Kalkalpen National Park lie within its municipal boundaries. When planning your trip, you can take your cues from a karst spring, a lake, themed trails, or the region’s milling and scythe-making history.

Nature between the national park, spring and lake

The Pießling spring is the largest karst spring in the Eastern Alps. Check current access information before your visit. Gleinkersee is a small pre-Alpine lake in Rossleithen. This gives you two different nature experiences to choose from: the karst spring and the lake. Their names help distinguish the destinations by their respective landscape features.

Scythe-themed trails and their highlights

The scythe-themed trails cover distances of 2 to 14 kilometres and have varying difficulty levels. When choosing a particular route, it is worth considering both its length and difficulty. This range describes different trails, not a single tour. As trail information may be updated when the network changes, check the latest information before setting out.

The Blue Trail of the scythe-themed trail in Rossleithen passes over Schweizersberg to Stummerkogel. It provides information about farmsteads, the mountain world and stories surrounding the scythe. This route thus combines landscape and agricultural themes with local scythe-making—a distinct focus among the themed trails.

The Waldhammer is considered a landmark of Rossleithen and is a highlight of the Green Trail. The world’s largest scythe is also part of the Green Trail. The Green Trail also includes a circular route around Gleinkersee, which is suitable for strollers and wheelchair users. If you are travelling with a stroller or wheelchair, this suitability information is important for planning; check accessibility before your tour.

Milling history and scythe-making

The Stummer Mill is the last preserved farmhouse mill in the Pyhrn-Priel region with two waterwheels and two millstones. It is in Rossleithen, above the scythe works on the path to the Pießling spring. Two waterwheels and two millstones are the specific features of this preserved mill. Alongside this, there is modern production: Schröckenfux GmbH still forges scythes for the whole world. Rossleithen thus brings together preserved traditional farm milling technology and continuing scythe-making as distinct themes.
