Discover Grünburg
Accommodation in Grünburg
Grünburg offers visitors a variety of highlights: the Steyrtal Museum Railway, the history of churches and historic ensembles, cycling tours and hikes. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start by considering which activities you want to shape your stay. The following details about local places and routes provide practical guidance.
Railway and cultural history
The Steyrtal Museum Railway is Austria’s oldest narrow-gauge railway powered by steam. Its route covers 16.7 kilometres from Steyr local station to Grünburg local station. In Grünburg, you can visit a small exhibition on the railway’s history as well as the railway workshop. Bicycles, pushchairs and wheelchairs are carried free of charge on the train, provided there is enough space in the luggage compartment. As conditions of carriage may change, it is best to check them before your journey.
The parish church of Grünburg, dedicated to Saint George, stands on a hill on the left bank of the Steyr in the cadastral municipality of Obergrünburg and has Romanesque origins. The presbytery was extended in 1457, and the nave in 1519, to their present Gothic form. In the Chapel of the Cross, a Baroque altar stands before a group depicting the Crucifixion, attributed to an artist from the Schwanthaler family. The Schmiedleithen adds another cultural and historical highlight: it is the only hammer-lord ensemble in the entire Eisenwurzen region preserved in its entirety.
Cycling along the Steyr
The R 8 family cycling trail runs close to the River Steyr. Along the route, there are swimming spots, rest areas, activity stations, viewpoints and canyons. The Steyrtal Cycle Path R 8 is also well suited to families, thanks to its largely flat route. One recommended section runs from Grünburg to the Steyrdurchbruch and back; along the way, you can enjoy views of the Steyr Gorge nature reserve. This gives you both information about the character of the cycling route and a specific section with views of the gorge to help with your planning.
Hikes and natural attractions
The “In the Footsteps of the Black Counts” circular trail starts and ends in Grünburg at Leonstein Castle. From there, it leads into the Valley of the Black Counts. Along Rinnerberger Bach, you can discover manor houses as well as smithies and workers’ houses. The route therefore combines a circular walk with insights into the valley’s architectural and industrial history.
The “Großer and Kleiner Landsberg” route is a summit and circular hike with a short climbing section. Terrain and conditions can change; take current conditions into account when planning. The route to Rinnerberger Waterfall and the gorge offers a different kind of walk: a marked hiking trail leads over a footbridge to the waterfall, and an iron staircase continues into Rinnerberger Gorge. The path infrastructure may change after storms or maintenance work. In summer, the clear stream is inviting for splashing and cooling off; water conditions and safe access may vary seasonally.
The L2 Hambaum Trail Leonstein starts at a car park just below Hambaum, beside the road. As parking arrangements may change, check the current situation at the starting point in advance. Another natural attraction is the Planwiesengebiet in Leonstein, in the municipality of Grünburg; it is a nature reserve.
More leisure activities
Leonstein Leisure Park has a climbing cube, a skate park and two beach volleyball courts with panoramic views all around. The Leonstein family and adventure pool, run by the municipality of Grünburg, reopened in 2002 after refurbishment. These attractions add more options for planning your day alongside the cultural, cycling and hiking activities.
