Berwang combines a ski area with a natural toboggan run, hiking trails and a historic village center. If you are looking for a hotel in Berwang, you can choose one based on the experiences you want to shape your stay: winter descents, walking tours or insights into the village’s history.

Winter days in Berwang

The Berwang ski area has twelve cable cars and lifts and offers access to a total of 35 kilometers of downhill runs from mid-December to early April. As operator information may be adjusted seasonally, check the current season status before your trip.

The “Bärenritt” natural toboggan run is also among the winter activities. From Berwang, it can be reached in about 30 minutes on foot via the cleared winter hiking trail to Das View. The route described connects the toboggan run with a trail through the winter landscape.

The history of skiing in the main village goes back a long way: the first ski lift began operating in Berwang.

Gorges and trails

After about 30 minutes, the Rinnen gorge hike reaches the Rotlech Gorge via several switchbacks. A viewing platform offers a view of the Rotlech Waterfall itself. The gorge and waterfall are different landmarks: the trail’s destination is the Rotlech Gorge, while the platform looks out over the waterfall.

The Berwang high-altitude trail heads east along an easy-to-walk path to a point about 300 m below the Hochalm, where it joins the Hochalm trail. The Berwang valley trail leads in the direction of Lähneralm and from there downhill to Bichlbach. The routes have different reference points: the high-altitude trail joins the Hochalm trail, while the valley trail descends to Bichlbach.

A trail starts in Mitteregg and takes about 30 minutes; it is suitable for strollers. If this suitability is important when planning your route, the trail description provides a specific point of reference.

Local history and special experiences

Simon Koch’s farmhouse—the last historic building in the village center—now serves as the setting for the Berwang Local History Museum. The Catholic parish church of St. James the Elder and the cemetery in Berwang, both listed as historic monuments, are also part of the village’s history and character.

The outdoor escape experience in Berwang brings together a team, a route through spectacular scenery and mysterious messages. In addition to the trail through the landscape, the experience centers on working together to solve the puzzles and interpret the messages.

For cycling trips, the Berwang Sonnalmbahn transports cyclists and their bikes to the starting points of downhill trails and bike tours. Another descent takes you from the Hochalm rapidly downhill for around ten kilometers on a mountain scooter. The activities described are different: the Sonnalmbahn takes you to the starting points of cycling routes, while the mountain scooter ride is a descent into the valley.
