Lähn: Hiking, Winter Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Lähn
When looking for a hotel for a stay in Lähn, it is worth first deciding what you would like to focus on during your trip: hiking, winter trails or local history. The hiking trails, railway connection, local history and listed buildings offer different points of reference.
Hiking with Different Destinations
The Wenglersee circular hike starts at the western entrance to Lähn, leads to the lake and returns to the starting point via the panoramic trail. The Bichlbacher Alm forest road starts at the western entrance to the village and follows the signs to the mountain pasture. This lets you choose between a circular route that returns via the panoramic trail and a signposted trail to Bichlbacher Alm. Check local conditions before setting off.
The Bichlbach–Lähn Alpenrosensteig trail runs high above the villages of Bichlbach, Wengle and Lähn through alpine pastureland. Its elevation and landscape set it apart from the Wenglersee circular hike and the trail to the mountain pasture. The hike up Plattberg from Lähn is recommended only for experienced hikers who are sure-footed and have a good head for heights. All three requirements apply; plan this hike only if you meet them all. Also check mountain conditions before setting off.
Two questions can help you choose a hike: Do you want a circular route that returns to its starting point or a trail leading to a named destination, and are you more drawn to a lake, a mountain pasture or the landscape above the villages? These features vary across the routes.
The Bichlbach–Lähn winter hiking trail can also be walked in the opposite direction, from Lähn to Bichlbach. This means you can choose Lähn as your starting point.
Plan Your Journey and Return Trip
The regional train from Innsbruck via Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Reutte to Pfronten stops at Lähn bei Bichlbach station. Check the timetable before you travel. The connection is also useful for the return trip from the Alpenrosensteig: after descending into the valley to Lähn, you can conveniently reach the starting point in Bichlbach by the Außerfernbahn railway or by bus. Check the journey times for this trip as well.
Local History and Listed Buildings
Lähn was formerly called Mittewald. After the avalanches of 1456 and 1689, the village was rebuilt before it was given the name Lähn.
The Catholic parish church of Our Lady of the Snows is protected as a listed building by decree. The church and the cemetery are part of Lähn’s protected heritage. The village’s history and listed buildings offer different points of interest: its history tells of the former name and rebuilding, while the church and cemetery form part of its protected heritage.
Lähn in the Regional Context
Lähn and Wengle are holiday destinations in the Lechtal Alps and Zugspitze area. Guests from both villages can take a free ski bus to the surrounding ski resorts in the region. Services and operating details may change seasonally; check before travelling whether the ski bus runs during your trip. This lets you distinguish between Lähn’s hiking trails and local history and its regional winter transport connections.
