Ehenbichl combines nature at Lake Rieden, winter activities at Waldrast and a history that ranges from the Lech crossing to sacred art. If you are looking for a hotel in Ehenbichl, these different highlights can help you organise your travel plans.

Nature at Lake Rieden

Lake Rieden is in the district of Rieden. It is home to Bilek’s azure damselfly, an extremely rare species of dragonfly. A nature trail leads around the lake and explains its ecological features. At this lake, both the rare dragonfly and the interpretation of ecological relationships take centre stage.

One special feature becomes apparent in winter: the lake does not freeze over. Underground springs keep the water moving constantly, although this movement is barely perceptible from above. This explains why the surface does not freeze, even in the cold season. The lake thus offers a distinctive natural attraction, different from the winter landscape around Waldrast.

Trails and views

Sintwag is a wooded rocky ridge with a sunny south-facing slope. A walking trail there offers splendid views of the surrounding mountains. It combines a distinctive landform with a path that draws your gaze towards the mountains.

A narrow bridge for pedestrians and cyclists connects Ehenbichl and Höfen. Another destination is Ehrenberg Castle World, which can be reached from Ehenbichl by a short hike or bike ride. The bridge provides a link between two places; Castle World is a destination in its own right, with the stated ways of getting there.

Winter at Waldrast

The Waldrast lift is a small valley ski lift for families, beginners and ski clubs. Its seasonal operating schedule may vary. The adjacent cross-country skiing centre has a floodlit, snowmaking-equipped trail for cross-country skiers and biathlon beginners. Waldrast is also a hub for numerous cross-country ski trails and is home to a biathlon club.

These details highlight different aspects of winter sports: the valley ski lift, the floodlit, snowmaking-equipped trail, and the network of trails and biathlon club. If you are planning your stay around a particular activity, take the lift’s variable seasonal schedule into account and check the conditions for your planned dates.

Chapels and local history

St. Magnus Chapel was built in 1680 following a vow made during the plague. The history of the Lech crossing also shapes the village’s past: until the bridge at Lechaschau was built in 1464, Ehenbichl was an important and convenient crossing point over the Lech by ferry.

A fresco on the house at Unterried 18 dates from the first half of the 15th century. It depicts Saints Christopher and Sebastian beside a body of water, which may be the Lech. The village square is characterised by imposing houses dating from the beginning of the 20th century and the well-maintained St. George’s Chapel. Ehenbichl thus features traces from different periods: the 15th-century fresco, the history of the ferry crossing, St. Magnus Chapel from 1680 and the later building period represented at the village square.

For winter plans, also take into account the Waldrast lift’s variable seasonal operating schedule.
