Discover Wängle: Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Wängle
Wängle can be understood through its landscape, local history and activities that vary by season. If you are looking for a hotel in Wängle, you can first consider whether hiking, winter activities or historic churches are a better fit for your trip.
Landscape and summer trails
The Gehrenspitze is a geographical landmark: Wängle lies at its foot. In summer, the extensive hiking area of the Hahnenkamm mountain world extends into the municipality of Wängle. From Wängle, the Lechweg initially leads to the Höhenpanoramaweg. These two summer references differ in scale: the hiking area extends into the municipality, while the next section of the Lechweg is specifically named. If you are planning to hike the Lechweg, keep this order in mind. Trail conditions can change with the seasons; check the latest conditions before setting out.
Local history and churches
The first documented mention of Wängle dates back to 1278, when the place was called “Wengelin.” The Catholic parish church of St. Martin was built much later, between 1702 and 1704, and features elaborate ceiling frescoes by Franz Anton Zeiller. The historical name and the church therefore belong to different historical contexts: one relates to the place name, the other to the building and its decoration.
In the Tyrolean monument register dated 23 June 2026, the Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Wängle is listed as a protected monument. Also listed as protected are the Herz-Jesu-Kapelle and the Ortskapelle Dreifaltigkeitskapelle in Holz, the Ortskapelle Heiligstes Herz Mariae in Winkl, and the Kapelle Hinterbichl in Hinterbichl, Wängle. Two chapels are in Holz; the others are associated with Winkl and Hinterbichl. The subject of protected religious buildings thus encompasses several named places and is not limited to the parish church.
Winter trails
In winter, the cross-country ski trail network of the Nature Park Region Reutte runs right along the edge of Wängle. The facilities may be maintained seasonally; check the latest conditions of the trail network before using it. Around Wängle, snowy fields have routes for winter hiking and snowshoeing. The Wängle Panorama Trail is part of a circular winter hiking route and offers wonderful views of the valley basin. Cross-country ski trails and snowshoe routes differ in the mode of travel.
The seasons determine the outdoor activities: in summer, the hiking area of the Hahnenkamm mountain world extends into the municipality, while cross-country ski trails and snowy field routes are winter activities. This makes it easy to match the activities mentioned to the right time of year for your trip.
