Landeck combines the history of its castle and parish church with trails towards Trams and cultural events. If you are looking for a hotel in Landeck, these themes can help you plan your stay around historic sites, a walking route or events.

Riverside setting and mountain passes

Landeck lies at the confluence of the Sanna and Inn. The town is also at the intersection of the mountain passes over the Arlberg, Reschen Pass and Fern Pass. These two geographical features help orient you to the town’s location: the rivers mark the confluence, while the named passes indicate further regional connections.

Landeck Castle and its history

Landeck Castle was built as a fortress around 1290 and served as the seat of the court and administration. Another historical trace concerns the Via Claudia Augusta: it once left the hillside in the area of the castle. One possible explanation is that there was a road station there and that the road branched off towards the Arlberg. The road station is a hypothesis, not a confirmed description of the place at the time.

The permanent exhibition “Stay or Go” explores the history of the Tyrolean Oberland through life at home and abroad. The title refers to two different perspectives on life, which also form the exhibition’s thematic framework. On a tour of Landeck Castle, the route leads up the tower’s stairs to a viewing platform. As access conditions may vary, check the current conditions for the tour and exhibition before your visit.

The Maria Himmelfahrt parish church is also one of Landeck’s historic sites. The parish church has roots dating back to the 5th century. The Landeck–Kaltenbrunn pilgrimage trail begins there and leads past Landeck Castle and along the Via Claudia Augusta towards Fließ.

Trails between the town parish church, castle and Trams

The 4.3-kilometre “Landeck–Trams Loop” circular hike starts at Landeck Town Parish Church. It leads through the Kuckuckswald forest to the Trams recreation area and the Tramser Weiher pond, then returns to the town parish church. The loop thus connects a church starting point with the landscape destination of Trams.

The first stage of the Tyrolean Castle Trail follows a different route and is a different length: it starts at Landeck Castle, leads to Biedenegg Castle in FlieĂź and covers 15.8 kilometres before returning to Landeck Castle. By comparison, the shorter Trams Loop starts and ends at the town parish church; the castle is the starting and ending point for the Castle Trail stage.

The Landeck–Kaltenbrunn pilgrimage trail offers another route option. It begins at the Maria Himmelfahrt parish church, leads past Landeck Castle and along the Via Claudia Augusta, and continues towards Fließ. The routes therefore differ in their starting points and courses: the Trams Loop returns to the town parish church, the Castle Trail stage to the castle, while the pilgrimage trail heads towards Fließ. As trail conditions can change, check the conditions for your chosen route before setting out.

Tramser Weiher, market and culture

The Große Tramser Weiher is an old, artificially created water reservoir on a terrace above Landeck, on the north-western slope of the Venet massif (Krahberg). A recent environmental report notes that the pond, covering around 6,000 square metres, is home to more than 30 dragonfly species and numerous rare amphibians, including the common frog and the common toad. The landscape around Trams thus complements the town’s historical and cultural themes with a habitat that has been documented.

The Landecker Frischemarkt takes place weekly in the centre of Landeck. Local delicacies and specialities are on offer, and visitors can sample them on site. Check the market day before you travel if you would like to include a visit in your plans. The cultural programme also includes concerts ranging from modern music and jazz to classical music. As individual events may change, it is worth checking the dates for your travel period.

The aim of the DIALOGRAUM KIRCHE project is to present treasures of church music and musical gems from different eras through to contemporary music in Landeck’s churches. The project also aims to create opportunities for personal encounters with the artists.
