Serfaus: Cultural Trail, Churches and Local History
Accommodation in Serfaus
Serfaus is a hotel destination with several specific points of interest relating to its cultural and local history. To decide whether the town matches your travel interests, there is a range of topics, from sacred architecture and the cultural trail to individual experiences. The Serfaus underground railway, which runs to the cable car’s valley station, is also useful for getting your bearings. This lets you plan your stay around the aspects that interest you most.
Churches and architectural history
The parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Serfaus is a Late Gothic church built around 1500. Its name, architectural style and period of construction offer a specific introduction to the town’s sacred architectural history.
The pilgrimage church “Our Lady in the Woods” spans a different range of periods: it features Early Christian, Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements. During renovations in the early 1960s, fragments of 14th-century frescoes were uncovered. The architectural elements and fragments thus point to different historical layers.
Cultural trail and local history
Recent grave finds in Serfaus show that a Christian community existed there as early as the 5th or 6th century. The cultural trail offers insights into the centuries-old use of the surrounding land for farming and mining. Its themes also include sacred sites, historic inns and the beginnings of modern tourism. The town’s history therefore encompasses not only churches, but also the use of the land and the development of travel.
The Plague Chapel, also known as the Muiren Chapel, is linked to a specific historical event. During the plague of 1634–35, the municipality of Serfaus made a vow to build the chapel and began construction. In 1637, Auxiliary Bishop Anton Crosini of Brixen consecrated it. The vow and construction began during the plague; the consecration came later.
Muiren Hill offers panoramic views and is an important place to experience the town’s history. The views and the local history are two distinct points of interest if you want to get a sense of Serfaus.
Experiences and orientation
The Serfaus underground railway can carry up to 3,000 people per hour at whisper speed to the cable car’s valley station. It is free of charge, noise-free and emission-free. If you are planning to take the cable car, the underground railway’s destination is clearly specified.
A 450-metre-long meditation trail begins at the Hög Family Light Chapel. Along the trail, seven sculptures artistically depict the Lord’s Prayer. Unlike the architectural history of the churches, the focus here is on the artistic interpretation of a prayer.
Tickets for the Serfauser Sauser are available directly at the attraction’s starting point or at the cable car ticket office in Serfaus. Check seasonal opening times before your visit.
When looking for a hotel in Serfaus, these different aspects of the town can help inform your choice of destination: sacred history, themes along the cultural trail, panoramic views or a specific attraction experience each offer a different focus.
