Discover Langesthei: Hiking and Church Architecture
Accommodation in Langesthei
Langesthei brings together two specific interests to consider when planning your trip: hikes connected with Pezinerspitze and the history of the Parish Church of St Jerome. The routes differ in their destinations and courses, so you can choose your hiking focus. At the same time, the church offers a distinct cultural and historical point of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Langesthei, these themes can help guide your choice of destination: would you mainly like to hike, or is the church’s architectural and artistic history also a reason for your trip?
Parish Church and Building History
The Parish Church of St Jerome is a simple Baroque building on the outside, with a pointed church tower. It was built between 1694 and 1696 on the site of a chapel. On 9 September 1698, the church was consecrated by the then Prince-Bishop Khuen of Brixen; a chaplaincy was established at the same time. These key dates distinguish the construction period from the consecration and provide a clear timeframe for the church’s origins.
In 1823, Leopold Puellacher of Telfs painted the frescoes in the church. Its history thus extends beyond its construction and consecration to a later artistic period. The simple exterior and the frescoes draw attention to different aspects of the church: its Baroque architecture and its artistic decoration.
Hiking to Pezinerspitze
The K.15 Pezinerspitze is a moderately difficult hike to Pezinerspitze and back. It starts and ends at Langesthei Church, a clear landmark for the route. From there, the trail first heads 300 metres east to Außerlangesthei. This distance describes only the first section, not the entire hike. The route then follows Trail No. 34 through woodland and mountain meadows to the unstaffed Langesthei Alpe.
Langesthei Alpe lies on the way to Pezinerspitze and offers views of the Paznaun valley basin. The alpine pasture is unstaffed. So do not plan on stopping there for refreshments, and check conditions before setting out.
The Langesthei Kirche stop on the hiking bus is also mentioned in connection with the K.15. As hiking buses may operate seasonally, check the timetable in advance for your travel dates.
Other Routes and Protected Sites
Another route is Kapellenweg 6: it passes the chapel in Stockach and continues to the church in Langesthei. The two routes can be distinguished by their stated destinations: the K.15 is a moderately difficult hike to Pezinerspitze and back, while Kapellenweg connects the chapel in Stockach with the church in Langesthei as waypoints. This gives you a choice between a hike with a stated difficulty level and a route linked to these two religious sites.
The Stockach wayside chapel and Langesthei cemetery are protected as historic monuments by ordinance. The monument register is dated 28 May 2024. Together with the parish church, they add to the cultural and historical points of interest Langesthei offers when planning your trip.
