Galtür: Mountain scenery, culture and hotels
Accommodation in Galtür
Galtür lies between the Silvretta and Verwall mountain ranges. When looking for a hotel in Galtür, you can plan your trip around the themes that matter most for your stay: marked hiking trails, winter sports and climbing, or culture at the Alpinarium and the parish church of Maria Geburt. The options vary considerably—from individual themed trails to a route divided into nine stages.
Choose hiking trails by duration and character
Galtür’s marked hiking trail network covers 250 kilometres and ranges from easy panoramic trails to alpine summit hikes. This variety offers you different options for planning your days. Conditions on individual trails vary by season; before setting out, check the conditions for your planned date.
The Paznauner Höhenweg is around 130 kilometres long and leads through the entire Paznaun valley to Galtür in nine stages. So, in addition to Galtür’s trail network, you can choose a route that extends across the region. For shorter time frames, you can compare two themed trails: the Path of Reflection leads from Zeinis to the forest chapel and takes about two hours. A themed trail in the municipality of Galtür shares information about the historical and present-day extraction and use of water and takes about 1.5 hours. These approximate times give you two specific reference points for planning your day.
Silvapark: winter sports and climbing
The Silvapark Galtür winter sports area is at an altitude of 2,295 metres. It is divided into six sectors and includes 43 kilometres of pistes, as well as ten mountain railways and lifts. Winter activities include downhill runs for alpine skiing and race snowboarding, freestyle parks, cross-country ski trails and ski touring routes. The area therefore offers more than just downhill runs, with other forms of winter sports too. Seasonal operations vary; check the current status of activities before your trip.
The bouldering area at the foot of the Ballunspitze is at an altitude of around 1,800 metres and comprises 14 sectors with more than 445 routes. The Silvapark via ferrata starts at the top station of the Alpkogelbahn in Galtür and leads to the 2,671-metre summit of the Ballunspitze. Access to and conditions in the bouldering area vary by season; the status and route conditions of the via ferrata also depend on the season. Check the information before setting out on your chosen route.
Culture at the Alpinarium and parish church
The Alpinarium Galtür is an experiential museum as well as an information and documentation centre. It features a dedicated memorial room and changing exhibitions on the dynamics of the mountain world, including alpine folding, climate and avalanches. The permanent exhibition “Käse nach Marienberg” includes a film about the Zinsweg. In the “Kugelkoordinaten” room, the surroundings are entirely mirrored and accompanied by a three-part sound journey.
The parish and pilgrimage church of Maria Geburt houses the Gothic devotional image “Mary, Queen of the Poor”. The first church was built in 1359. The church was destroyed during the Engadine invasion in 1622 and rebuilt by 1624. Between 1777 and 1779, it was extended, given new vaults and renovated in the late Baroque style. The building history can thus be placed in chronological order: the first church was followed by its destruction and reconstruction, and later by its extension and renovation.
A culinary event
