Fiss combines a historically shaped village scene with activities that vary considerably depending on the season. Alongside local customs and architectural history, these include summer attractions, winter activities and a hike offering views of the surrounding villages. When planning your trip, it is worth bearing in mind the event schedule and seasonal conditions.

Village Scene and Architectural History

Fiss is located in the Tyrolean Oberland, on a flat, south-facing sunny plateau in the Oberes Gericht, about 500 metres above the Inn Valley. To this day, the village has preserved the character of a former Rhaeto-Romanic clustered settlement. The village centre is home to individual farmhouses dating from the 15th to the 17th century.

One notable building is s’Paules und s’Seppls Haus. A stately Upper Inn Valley through-farmhouse, it dominates the old village centre of Fiss. The museum in the house documents its varied architectural history and the lives of its residents. Thus, Fiss’s architectural history is represented by both individual historic farmhouses and a distinctive farmhouse building.

A Tradition with a Regular Schedule

The whole village and its residents take part in preparing the Fisser Blochziehen, making the costumes and masks, and joining the procession. This keeps the centuries-old tradition alive. Since 2011, the Blochziehen has been officially recognised as part of Austria’s intangible cultural heritage and is therefore afforded special cultural protection.

The large Blochziehen event for adults takes place every four years. If you are planning to travel to Fiss for the event, check the exact dates in advance. Its multi-year cycle is a different planning consideration from activities that are specifically tied to a season.

Summer and Winter Experiences

Summer Attractions

In summer, visitors on the Skyswing in Fiss are lifted to a height of around 22 metres. From there, they can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains; the ride back down provides an intense sensation of height and speed. On the Fisser Flieger, visitors are strapped into an eagle-like flying device and glide downhill at speeds of up to 80 km/h, directly above alpine meadows and mountain scenery.

The Fisser Flitzer is a summer toboggan run in Fiss and one of the highlights of the Sommer-Funpark Fiss. The three experiences differ in their movement and setting: the Skyswing goes up and back down, the Fisser Flieger travels downhill over the landscape, and the Fisser Flitzer centres on a summer toboggan run. Operating conditions for these attractions may vary depending on the season.

Winter in the Village and on the Course

On the northern side of Fiss, there is a Skimovie course with a parallel race course. Special cameras record skiers’ runs and provide a video that can be analysed, shared or watched. In winter, there is also a pedestrian zone where visitors can stroll through the village.

Hiking, Connections and Practical Information

The hike from Fisser Joch to Kuh Alm Fiss passes the Frommes Lakes. A cross along the hike offers far-reaching views of the surrounding villages, as well as Fiss and Serfaus. The lakes, views and two named destinations provide different points of reference along the route.

Together with Serfaus and Ladis, Fiss forms an interconnected family region in the Tyrolean Oberland. The three villages are connected by cable cars and, in winter, by a ski bus. As seasonal transport arrangements may change, check the current timetables when planning your trip.

A local traffic rule may also be important when planning your journey: since 1990, a night-time driving ban has been in force in Fiss during the holiday season, from 23:00 to 06:00. Guests arriving or departing, as well as residents travelling to or from the village, are exempt. Check the local exemptions before driving.
